There are quite a few elderberry based supplements available. Sambucol was the first on the market back in the 90s. I keep a bottle of elderberry, C and zinc lozenges handy, but I haven't gotten a cold or a flu since I started taking Vit D3.

elderberry syrup tastes delicious and is very effective with colds and flu. I keep it on hand all winter, thank you for reminding me to go buy some. If you don't want to make your own you can buy it as Sambucol at Community Market, Raley's, and other places that sell over the counter and herbal medicines.<style type="text/css">DIV { MARGIN: 0px } </style><style></style>

Hi Elderberry fans:

Just a quick FYI: while the S. mexicana berries are safe, they are safer with cooking; the leaves, stems and roots are TOXIC. This is unlike the European elderberry S. nigra. See Caution - Elderberry can be dangerous (https://www.kaweahoaks.com/html/elderberry_poisoning.html). (The "religious center" mentioned in the article is the Tassajara Zen Center.) Also, some children have been poisoned making and playing flutes out of elderberry wood. (This is info from an "Edible Plants" class I took years ago at Pt. Reyes.)

Some time with Google - there seem to be two native species in California that are interchangeably called the "blue" or "mexican" elderberry, one high elevation and one coastal. There is also the "red" elderberry in these parts that may be more toxic. I've seen both growing together at Pt. Reyes.

Happy naturecrafting!

Any leads on best place to get elderberry syrup?

After trying many varieties of elderberry products, my favorite is only available online from Vitacost. I use the ultra concentrate syrup. Here is their whole line:

They provide locally and sustainably grown medicinal herbs for our communities. 707-824-1447

In season (June-ish through September-ish) they also provide fresh elderberries.
