I just moved to Camp Meeker from Willow Creek. As a former burn tech (burn center body repairman), I'm close to a lot of big fire agencies in the Sate and well aware of the fire danger and how fast disaster can hit. Especially living in a tinder box like West County. The other evening, I heard the siren go off and 20 minutes later I passed 2 engines and a batallion of Camp Meeker volunteers dousing a fire at the entrance to town. IMHO, the volunteers have a zeal for knocking down fires that I've rarely seen in their paid counterparts.

Those annual pancake breakfasts, chicken and spahgetti feeds sponsored by the volunteer firefighters are much more than social events. These volunteer fire houses make a few thousand bucks go a long way to protect our homes and our skins. If you can't attend, try to send down a donation with a note of thanks when you can. Camp Meeker, Occidental, Gold Ridge, Bodega, Valley Ford, Monte Rio....they all take care of the locals and cover their counterparts when called.
Thanks for the soapbox.

I would like to say thank you to ALL the West County fire agencies be it volunteer, paid, and/or combination. I know most of those who are paid started off as volunteers and worked their way into paid positions. I happen to be one of those people. I also know that ALL of the fire agencies in the West County could use more volunteers. If you have the time, stop in at your local fire house and ask how you can help.

Thank you.

And don't forget Cazadero, Fort Ross, and Timber Cove Volunteer Fire Departments! And the Pole Mountain Fire Lookout (privately funded, with a breakfast at Casini Ranch every year)!
