View Full Version : A Cat’s Nightmare On E Street

Driving home late Tuesday night, Highway 12, coming down the E Street off ramp, I cringed when I saw a cat sprawled out in the middle of the fast lane. Assuming it was road kill, I started to swerve to be sure to miss hitting it when to my horror the poor thing lifted a single paw in a feeble attempt to rise. I braked and pulled over, determined to get the cat out of the road.
I girded myself for the worst, and waited while several cars swerved to avoid the orange tabby, now laying motionless on the road. When the road was clear, I ran out, scooped her up as carefully as I could, and rushed back to the curb. I laid her down on the sidewalk, expecting to see her die in front of my eyes.
I very gently put my hands on her, and tried to comfort her as best I could, while I thought about what to do. She looked like she was in shock or dying, or both. Then, I remembered that there is an all night emergency vet over on Fulton and Guerneville (PetCare Veterinary Hospital) , so I opened my car door and, as gently as I could, laid her on the passenger seat.
Then, she started crying.
She couldn’t move, not even lift her head, and she cried. I gotta tell you, this was hard to hear. I placed my hand on her ever so gently, and told her it was going to be okay. What else could I do?
It seemed to take a very long time to drive that five miles, but when I finally rang the night bell, two angels in smocks ran out and very professionally took over.
They gave her pain medication, put her on IV fluids, and said we’ll just have to wait and see (large vet bills are out of the question for me). If she survived the night, she’d be taken to Sonoma County Animal Shelter (the one just off Airport Blvd) where a vet would assess her injuries and go from there.
She did survive that night; she’s still alive, she's not suffering (otherwise, they'd euthanize her), she's moving around in her cage and very shakily standing. I’m hoping to be able to go and spend some time with her tomorrow.
You can see her listed here, search for stray cat #A235867

I’m going to try and link her photo here; this was taken at the shelter less than 24hrs after she was hit.
If she lives, she’s going to need an angel… do you have room in your heart and home for a real survivor?

Animals that are hit often lay there watching cars go over them or come close. And other animals get hit by going to eat roadkill. It is never too late to get a dead or dying or possibly able-to-survive animal out of the road.

Have you contacted any of the many non-profit organizations here in Sonoma County? This is a story that must be heard. Although there are many animals who need homes, this little girl has a special story and an angel like you to rescue her. Try Paws for love for possible assistance in vet bills and Pets Lifeline for fostering. There are many more organizations but these are the two that come to mind right now.

Perhaps one of the best rescues for this type of situation is GAIL POPE of BRIGHT HAVEN. I believe they ONLY TAKE IN INJURED OR ILL ANIMALS who otherwise would not be adoptable. They give these animals LOTS OF TLC and the best care possible including herbs and raw meat.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESCUING THIS SWEET CAT.

Here's an update;
I spoke with the shelter staff yesterday, our sweet tabby is described as depressed and shaky on her feet (I would be too if I were hit by a car then put in a small cage).
She's not in obvious or severe pain, or they'd have euthanized her already.
She probably doesn't have broken bones, she may be hurting due to bruising from a glancing blow by a car, or she may have injuries like damaged spinal vertebrae. The shelter doesn't have the resources to do a thorough diagnosis.
The Sonoma County Animal Shelter is overflowing with cats, and they tell me that unless we find an adopter, she'll probably be euthanized either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Any and all help would be appreciated, and thank you all for your kind support.

Thank you for the update - try a couple feline rescue groups in the area - Countryside Rescue
The shelter address is 3410 Guerneville Road, Santa Rosa 707-542-3766.

An orange female is rare! In fact had someone inquire into my kittens for adoption looking for one just the other day.
I hope she pulls through and can find the support to heal and find her home again (or a new one)
Thank you for all you've done for her.

Great news!
We have a wonderful adopter, Megumi Cusick, who has opened her heart and home to the orange tabby. She's a vet tech and a volunteer for BrightHaven - our lucky cat couldn't have done better.
I just spoke with the very helpful director of the shelter, Cathy Fenn, she's going to try to arrange to release the cat today so the tabby can go directly to Megumi's vet for a thorough exam and treatment. If not today, tomorrow for sure.
With Megumi's permission, I am including her contact info here as well as the vet who will be caring for the orange tabby. Megumi could certainly use some help to cover medical costs, the extent of the cat's need is not yet known.

The orange tabby's new name is Uni, she's spending her first night in her new home tonight.
She had xrays today - no broken bones or major injuries. A blood sample showed no major problems. She has a bad bladder infection and trouble standing up. She also has badly infected gums. She's already been spayed.

Probably my last update...
I visited Uni today at Megumi's house. She's really doing well. She's walking, but still wobbly and sort of keels over easily, but her progress is so fast that I won't be surprised if she fully recovers.
She's very outgoing and friendly and purrs and kneads her paws in response to petting and cuddling. Megumi is absolutely great with her.
I've been deeply touched by this whole experience. Thanks to everyone involved -- the PetCare staff, the Sonoma County Animal Shelter staff, Gail at BrightHaven, WaccoBB, Megumi, Ross Valley Veterinary Hospital and the myriad people, from all over, even as far away as West Virginia, who responded to Uni's plight. Some offered to foster, some offered to adopt, some gave financial support, and all gave their prayers and best wishes.
Lest we think too much attention was paid to a single cat when there are so many in need, most of the above people have dedicated their lives to helping animals, for little or no pay, day after day, and I am humbled by their steadfast efforts to make this a more compassionate world.

I know some of you fell in love with Uni, so I wanted to let you know she's doing great. She's physically okay, she can play and run around now, she's adapted well to her new home and, as you can see, she has made some new friends...

Uni has become something of a minor legend among some of the cat rescue groups (I received emails from as far away as Florida), and I know some you love her too, so, here she is again, starring in her first motion picture!
