When buying anything-whether soaps, shampoos, fruit, cheese, produce, meats, juices, water, bulk items or packaged items- make a conscience effort to look at labels. In sonoma county, we are lucky to get pretty much all of our dairy, poultry/meats, fruits and vegetables local. It makes no sense at all to buy tomatoes from mexico at whole foods or some other market. If you cant get something local, at least be sure it is from the U.S. Its amazing how much we import, even though we live in one of the richest agricultural areas anywhere. Support local farmers at the market or join a CSA- encourage whole foods and other markets to sell more local produce and ask them why they choose to import so much.

(Also- avoid excessive packaging when buying anything. )
Its amazing how much these practices might narrow down your options of what is actually avaible from local farms with little or no packaging- at our markets. I think its important to realize this however- beacuse it shows us how much we have become dependant on packaged and non-local items simply because they tend to outweight other options. Imagine if whole foods or other markets only carried seasonal fruits and vegetables?
