I hope this does not seem commercial in nature...

I am trying to find a source for decent quality domestically made (not in China!) reusable shopping bags, preferably of canvas or hemp fiber. I object to buying ones that are shipped all the way here across the Pacific by a Diesel-burning monster ship.

In addition to my own use, I am preparing a TV PSA raising awareness to the fact that so many of our 'green' products, like these bags, are manufactured abroad and shipped here, when it would be fare less resource-intensive to make them locally. I want to promote industrial hemp fiber as well.

Does anybody know where to get such bags?

Have you tried Dharma Trading Company in San Rafael?

They do mail orders and are online (https://dharmatradingcompany.com/); or you can call them at 1-800-542-5227.

I've done biz with them for at least 20 years, both as a business and as a clothes-wearing individual.

I really appreciate your consciousness with regards to what reusable bag to use. How about the idea of using bags made from materials that might have otherwise ended up in the landfill? We have been making bags from beautiful remnant fabrics (many collected from The Legacy benefitting the Sebastopol Senior Center). We sell at local sales, occasionally the Sebastopol Farmer's Market, and we're getting our website up and running at b-sage. (https://www.b-sage.com). Thank you for working for the environment. If you have any questions I can be reached on my cell at 415/572-5775

Any hemp fabric is probably from China or Europe, because I haven't heard of any commercial hemp fiber farming in the USA in many years. Also, I haven't heard of any fabric other than hand woven being made on the west coast. Maybe wool from Pendleton Woolen Mills in Oregon or Washington. There are many patterns to knit or crochet market bags, but all available yarn is from places like South Carolina. When you try to get local you realize how interdependent nations and states are, and how so much of what we used gets hauled around long distances.

There is lots of local material being recycled. Most of my canvas shopping bags come from the Salvation Army, were found up at Lytton Springs. Barrie

Ah HA!! There's a winner. So, when I hold up various "made in China" bags for the cameras, I can also point out that domestically made alternatives are available.

All right, I'll start scripting the TV spot.

And, it was helpful to learn that hemp fiber will likely not originate in the US either.

Thanks for all the responses, folks!

Talk to Susie Blair of the Seb Farm market.
