The City of Sebastopol’s Adopt-a-Landscape Program allows you to adopt a median, island or park area to provide additional maintenance to Sebastopol's green spaces. The program encourages businesses, organizations and individuals to commit their time, talents and/or money to the maintenance and/or improvement of one of the City's green spaces.
Depending on the size of the area, volunteers need to spend an average of 4 - 6 days per year on their adopted area. Or, a business or individuals may opt to donate the funds to provide for landscaping services. Everyone who participates is acknowledged with a sign at the site.
Participation can happen in several ways. One way is to make a commitment to maintaining a specific park space, median, or island which might include removing litter and weeds, mulching, planting, or light pruning at regular intervals throughout the year. Another way to help is by providing the financial support that would be applied to a specific area fur its maintenance and improvement.
The entire community is welcome to get involved, including community groups, businesses, service clubs, fraternal organizations, schools, private clubs, youth groups and individuals. There are a number of ’adoption’ opportunities. The new Skategarden Park has several areas needing ongoing care. The Laguna Preserve is another opportunity, and there are other park and landscape areas needing attention.
Contact Dante Del Prete, Assistant Superintendent, at the Department of Public Works at 707-823-5331 (ext 103). He will help you develop an adoption plan to coordinate your group's intended activities, frequency, and the City support that might be needed. Adoption is for a minimum of one year and can be extended by mutual agreement. A written agreement between the Public Works Department and your group will record the adoption and details.

Does the City maintain the liability in the event that a passing pedestrian slips, trips and falls while the volunteer is working with equipment on the ground, or even after the volunteer has left? Thank you.

Nice idea as long as no one trying to make an honest living is left out of a job because of it, as a city gardener or small business landscape company.

I`d say find a poor elderly person or a dissabled person on a fixed income and do some volunteer gardening for them. The city pays for every other service they get (and way to much for some) Why ask for gardeners for free. We all need a job these days. I understand the adopt landscape thing and it is a great idea for for a landscape company becuse they get to put a little sign up and it is advertising so they are getting free advertising for doing community service and will probably be making some money off of it. Gardening is fun, but becuse it`s fub does`nt mean you should expect it for free. I love gardening, I`ve been lucky enough to have landscaping support me for more years than I care to divuldge, 16 yrs for a city parks dept. Pay your gardeners like you pay anyone else for a service.

Sure the "advertising" would be nice, but I've always wanted to harness the energy of the community for some public service project and this seems ideal! Not only will it be pleasant work and help the city and the environment, but we'll also build a little deeper community in the process.
Whaddya say we adopt a piece in the Laguna Preserve as a community project? I'll be sure to be there for each of the 4-6 days a year. Would you (anybody) be willing to commit to helping at least one of the days? We could have a potluck lunch and I'll buy the first round at Hopmonk afterwards! Sounds like fun and think how proud you'll be!
If you are willing to commit at least one day, please express gratitude for this post or reply privately.

Great Idea Barry - I won't commit as I may be responding in another manner, but if not - I'll be there, too.
