I would like to open up a discussion here on the list regarding the current wave of U.S. states approving same-sex marriage, whether it be through their courts or their legislatures.
However, none of the five (5) U.S. states that recognize gay marriage today achieved this legal statute through voter referendum. Does this mean that the framers of the US Constitution in the 18th century were correct in fearing the general public and placing systemic safety mechanisms to protect against direct popular control over our political institutions?
Plainly stated, are the masses a huge heap of vulgar rabble that have to be kept on a short leash and from putting their grubby paws on democracy, and screwing everything up like we did here in California with Proposition 8?
Here is the New York Times article on today's legalization of gay marriage in Maine:
https://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/07/us/07marriage.html?_r=1&hp
Any observations and recommendations, however brief or whimsical, will be greatly appreciated.
Edward
