Clear Channel (the multi-national telecommunications giant) has recently announced another seeping wave of layoffs in the US. For several decades the company has been able to build a monopoly over music in the public domain.
As owners of radio stations, newspapers, television stations and musical venues they have guided revenues into their own coffers. This monopoly is coming to a close. They do not have the ability to dictate who we support. To their surprise, the flock is waking up.
The alternative economy is taking shape and replacing the mega-corporations. As personal finances get tight individuals are far more likely to support their homegrown talents. So go support your local rock band! Buy music directly from the artists or record shops that provide your community exposure to great music.
