and will those of us who need more hours at work find work to do?
will the economy get any better?
Yes. It's an economic cycle - it will get better - we will again see periods of prosperity. Hang in there.
It's confusing, and causes anxiety, because, aside from a period of economic downturn, we're experiencing an economic paradigm change, from a system based on "growth" (building more sub-divisions), to a system based on efficiency. It'll take some time, but as the change gains momentum, we'll see some really cool world changes (in more ways than just economic), and once again experience personal prosperity.
and will those of us who need more hours at work find work to do?A rhetorical question, giving voice to your (our!) anxiety. I'm reminded of the last two recessions that had significant impact on my own economic growth - the late '60's/early '70's, and the early '80's. Both had economic tight times for working people. But things came around again, didn't they?
During those, and this, tight times, we workers weren't able to increase our personal income by just agreeing to work more hours. We had to improve our personal economic plights by finding creative ways to use our available resources.
For myself, I'm tightening my belt wherever possible Ex: much fewer trips to the cinema, using materials I have around the farm, instead of buying new, and just in general, making more use of what I currently have. I'm investing my labor time in developing a new business, which takes a couple of years to get rolling, with the assumption that, when the recession recedes I'll be able to capitalize on it and get my payday.
This is a time when most of us have to "hunker down" and endure. But as we hunker, we can still do things to improve our personal situations. How we do it varies with each of us. Important to always make forward movement. Hang in there, Kai, it'll get good again!
