Hi--I filled out a form sent to me online, saved it, but forgot to 'save as' in "my docs"--so it went into this little hellhole that I can only access by saving another document from the same online source---and I can see the one I want on the list!, but the program won't let me open it; it only lets me save the next one. Then it's gone, the whole little hellhole. This hellhole (sorry for the repeat, but it's the best word for it) has an alpha-numeric title that comes from god-knows-where, and that totally eludes any search I do.
Help???????

Hi Kathy
If you are on a PC it sounds like the file is in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder. Here are the locations that it could be in depending on which operating system you are using:
<LI class=NormalList>If you have Windows Vista then Temporary Internet Files are in these locations (note that on your PC they can be on other drive instead of drive C): C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\
Note, that you will have to change the settings of Windows Explorer to show all kinds of files (including the protected system files) in order to access these folders. <LI class=NormalList>If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000 then Temporary Internet Files are in this location (note that on your PC they can be on other drive instead of drive C): C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
If you have only one user account on Windows XP or Windows 2000 then replace <username> with Administrator to get the path of the Temporary Internet Files folder.
You should be able to find it directly with the above info. Good luck!
Cheers

Wow Don. It looks like you really know your Windows and thanks for sharing advice freely.
You should also consider working for Apple.
You could write their ad copy.

if you can find your way back to the Hellhole directory, once the window comes up, you should be able to select the document you want to retrieve, then right click, "Copy", then you can paste in onto your Desktop or My Documents folder.
alternatively, if you do a search on your computer, and use the "when was it modified" sub-menu, that will let you search for documents that were created in the last 2 days (for example). the document you're looking for should come up in that search, along with the formal name of the Hellhole directory.

as HotCompost said, you can use "Search". If you don't really understand where things get stored on your computer, this can happen pretty easily. "Search" is in the menu of the Explorer (MyComputer) window. It's not the fastest way to find things, but it's an effective brute-force tool!

computers have a near-infinite ability to cause stress, cursing, etc.
waiting for a search may not produce such a reaction, BUT normally it takes a while to find the document (depends on the speed of the computer & other things.)
best to start the search & then go do something else (e.g. drink chamomile tea) so the process of using the computer is more fun & it's a proper creative tool, as opposed to a pain in the derriere.

argh. the "send" button has a mind of its own too. Anyway as I was about to say before I so rudely interrupted myself: I actually SAW the "KD2W4YYN" I was looking for, in the crawl as the search progressed. But hitting the "stop" button didn't freeze it, just stopped the search altogether.
