Count me among those who have left the Yahoo group Wacco-bb. From now on I'll only be involved with WaccoBB. I've been considering this move for several weeks because of the e-mail load in my mailbox. I've also become concerned about Yahoo's willingness to place business before individual freedoms. The recent incident with the Chinese government that resulted in the jailing of another journalist clearly demonstrates Yahoo's priorities.
With the domestic spying issue so prominent in the news, I'm feeling generally powerless to defend against those who see no harm in violating Fourth Amendment rights against warrentless searches. Getting Yahoo out of my life may be a small gesture, but if we were all to do it, and make our reasons clear, that might help the next journalist the Chinese want to toss into jail.
I realize these two issues are not directly connected, but they are a part of the same Orwellian mind set that is now more pervasive in this country than ever. While I may not be able to stop the President from violating basic human rights, I can take a stand against Yahoo's violation of somebody elses.
I therefore ask that you join my virtual protest in that corporate-controlled virtual community and unsubscribe from Wacco-bb. If you're not sure how to do this, go to the bottom of any Wacco-bb e-mail in your mailbox and click on the unsubscribe URL. And then can I get a RIGHT ON! (How I miss the '60s!)

Well said, Pete, and I agree with you that using yahoo products is a bad idea. I belong to a few groups, I have friends on Yahoo messenger, I like to play yahoo pool! It's difficult to unplug. But I agree Yahoo has crossed a line and I can't support them anymore either. Just being a member of a group or going to their site for driving directions profits them in the amount they can charge advertizers. I'll join you in quitting them, Peter. It feels right.

BTW everyone, www.Care2.com (https://www.Care2.com) , a cool site with progressive politics, has free groups if you need them.

Peter;

I hope the choices you make serve you well.

In the bigger picture it does not really matter where people post their ads.

Just know, that as long as Yahoo provides the free groups service, there will be the wacco-bb (https://groups.yahoo.com/group/wacco-bb/) group available to the community at no cost, in case you might find sudden need for it again.

Yours,
Ingo

Life is all about choices. It's always good to take the bigger picture into account, but it's also good to see what we can do as individuals to try to affect changes that we would like to see.

Being very independent thinkers here in waccoland, I can't imagine that we could ALL agree on ANYTHING, but in conversation we help each other understand things better and realize that what we DO can help change things.

Peter, you help us understand that leaving Yahoo! may help change their politics, or at least make us feel better about ours.

Ingo, you help us understand that we should always have choice...and a backup.

Thank you both for the conversation.
You've got us thinking.
Tom
