wow. while my family was in process of moving, the old neighbors called the city and had my sons porsche towed . it was parked on street for a day while we juggled items to be moved. it was in fact expired tags. oops . nice neighbors glad we are moving. anyways it cost 200 for a police release and near 400 for the tow and storage ( one day) and of course we had to re up the insurance and pay up the past due registration. what a mess. we caught the tow truck towing it and the driver threatened my son with murder death kill as he had concerns that the vehicle was improperly being towed. do we have any recourse of any kind regarding this bs. i don't know if the incident you're describing occurred in Santa Rosa.

below i've re-posted my description of a similar incident; i was trying to get help for someone who experienced something that may have been worse than what you're describing.

one or more of the local police departments has turned the theft of cars, and maybe the towing of cars, into a genuine profit center.

the reality is, there are a few criminals - maybe more - on the inside of the SRPD. which gives me a greater appreciation for groups like Copwatch.

i discussed the incident of the twice-stolen car with the recently retired (Santa Rosa) city attorney, who i knew from the gym. i got the impression that that was one of the reasons he left that job (he took a 50%+ cut in pay to teach school) - he was tired of defending the behavior of the city of Santa Rosa.

"A friend has related the following to me, about one of her relative's experiences with the Santa Rosa Police Department.

A few months ago a young person's house was burglarized, in the City of Santa Rosa, in the County of Sonoma County, California. Their car was stolen & their money was stolen.

The crime victim reported the incident to SRPD.

The police eventually found the car. They told the crime victim that they would have to pay a large amount of money, about $1000, to recover the car from the impound yard.

The crime victim started saving their money to pay this fee, but not fast enough to keep up with the SR police department machinery.

The SRPD sold the car, and kept the money.

I am looking for the following to assist my friend and her relative in being treated right. Currently, the crime victim has been traumatized twice - by the initial burglary, and by their treatment at the hands of the SRPD."

Although I have yet to have any problems that require it, I pay $17 a month for legal insurance through Pre-Paid Legal which provides me a sticker for my car window that lets people know I have a lawyer. My friend who sold me the policy has told me a few stories of people he knows who were being harassed in some way by the 'authorities' and had them stop when they pulled out their membership card and said, "Let me call my layer."

I have another friend who lives on SSI disability and occassionally finds herself being bullied by one of the agencies. She was recounting a recent run in with Housing Autority which is trying to get her to move out of the ramshackle little two bedroom house she is in and into a tiny studio in one of the Housing Authority ghettos. She uses the second bedroom to entice a live in assistant because it is difficult to find someone reliable on the wages paid by the county. Housing Authority has been trying to make a case that she doesn't need an assistant despite her doctor's statement that she does. She told me she resolved the incident by threatening to call her lawyer and they got off her case. I said I didn't know she had a lawyer and she told me she got Pre Paid Legal just to help with the harassment from these agencies and seems to be getting her money's worth. She has yet to need to actually call the lawyer.

If you know anyone who is selling PPL you might consider getting a policy.
