Out of the nearly 9,000 Waccovians out there, at least 100 or so of us (probably more like 400) have glitches in functioning related to our moms' drinking during pregnancy. These may be any combination of:
~~AD/HD symptoms (disorganization, impulsivity, distractibility)
~~better ability to talk than to listen
~~oversensitivity to light, sound, touch--incoming stimuli of all kinds, inc. getting easily discombobulated in crowds
~~lots of good and sincere ideas, terrible follow-through
~~math problems
~~big fluctuation in functioning from one day to the next
~~trouble keeping priorities straight
~~clumsiness
~~"not working up to capacity" on report cards...or in life
These are the core symptoms of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. (Not everyone has all of them, and they range in severity from totally debilitating to just glitchy.)
My doctoral research was on adult children of alcoholics with signs of prenatal alcohol damage. I want to take this research a step farther, and here's where you come in:
If you identify--or think you do--with some of the issues listed above, and you think your mom may have been drinking during pregnancy with you (doesn't have to be heavy drinking, and it might have been before she knew she was pregnant), and you would be willing to share your experiences with me--especially if you have some history with 12-step work--email me!
