Hi, Waccolistas. I have a small, old dog who's very shy and badly needs a tooth cleaning. I've heard of someone in the West County who does this without having to put dog under. Sophie's in pretty good health, but I'm very hesitant to knock her out for this treatment. On the other hand, she's very skittish around strangers. I'd love to talk to the person I've heard about. You can reach me at 569-1773 or at [email protected]. Thanks.

Roland, my understanding is that if a dog is not anesthetized the teeth cleaning is not complete. There is a reason for putting a dog "under" for teeth cleaning. The vet needs to get under the gums, and this is not pleasant for even the most tolerant of dogs.

I share your concern about this, but a 10 year old dog is really young if in otherwise good health. I would encourage you to talk to your usual vet and ask the risks in your individual case. Most dogs do just fine for the short time they are under.
