“The Department of Agriculture tried to stop Eleanor Roosevelt from planting a White House garden intended to inspire citizens to grow food,” writes Juliane Poirier Locke in the current (Feb. 18-24) weekly “Bohemian.” “They told her that home gardens would be a threat to the food industry…the food industry has become a threat to us,” she writes in the Green Zone column.

“Victory Gardens Return” titles Locke’s story. She reports that celebrity chef Alice Waters got San Francisco “to replace lawn with lettuce at City Hall.” Now Waters is working on President Obama. “Go, Alice!” encourages Locke.

The rest of Locke’s article can be read at the following link: News & Features | Green Zone | Victory Gardens Return (https://www.bohemian.com/bohemian/02.18.09/greenzone-0907.html). Consider reading it and planting your garden. If you do not have outside space, see the article “Farmer Sings Praises of Green-Roof Efforts” in the Feb. 21 “Press Democrat.” Or move to where you can plant a garden, if you plan to survive this beyond-Recession, beyond-Depression Collapse that we are experiencing. Enjoy!

this reminds me of the word from yoga, "Drishti", some thing or place you focus on to help find balance when you're doing a balance posture.

for most people it's probably healthier to focus on starting a few hundred food plants for a garden, or finding cheap gopher fencing, or all the other things that go with gardening, than ... other things that people focus on. the stock market, how you're going to afford food.

reminds me of the moment in Phantom Menace when Qui Gon Jin counsels the young Anakin Skywalker, "your focus determines your reality."

of course, Anakin went on to become Darth Vader, but i thought it was a good philosophical morsel from Qui Gon Jin. or George Lucas.
