Your Help Is Needed to Save Yellowstone’s Bison

National Call-in Day, February 2

Over the past three weeks, the National Park Service (NPS) has captured 672 bison — more than one-tenth of Yellowstone’s entire bison population — near the northern boundary of Yellowstone National Park (YNP). All were sent to slaughter in violation of the government’s own bison management plan except for 87 calves who have become test subjects in an ill-conceived experiment. The park’s bison trap is empty now, but the NPS could restart trapping operations at any time. The killing is ostensibly to prevent the transmission of the bacteria, Brucella abortus, to cattle outside the park, and was done to protect less than 200 cows owned by the Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT).

CUT is a controversial religious sect with headquarters on land adjacent to Yellowstone National Park. In 1999, the group received 13 million federal dollars as part of a land deal intended to provide the bison and other wildlife access to important winter range on CUT lands. After seven years, not a single bison has been allowed to access that winter habitat, as the group continues to graze a small herd of cattle on its land.

The bison killing is enormously controversial because the risk of bacteria transmission is exceedingly remote. Indeed, there has never been a confirmed case of bacteria transmission from bison to cattle under natural conditions. Moreover, though only pregnant bison pose even a theoretical risk of transmission, bulls, calves, yearlings, and other no-risk animals are routinely killed.

What You Can Do:

A national call-in day to save Yellowstone bison will be held on Thursday, February 2, from 8:30am until 5:00pm, Mountain Standard Time. Please call Suzanne Lewis, Yellowstone National Park Superintendent, at 307-344-2002 and call Kate Gordon, Church Universal and Triumphant President, at 1-800-245-5445.

Tell Ms. Lewis that the slaughter of nearly 600 Yellowstone bison is unacceptable, illegal, and inconsistent with the National Park Service mission. Ask her to stop the capture and slaughter of Yellowstone bison.

Politely ask Ms. Gordon to make room for bison on CUT-owned property. Remind her that CUT was given taxpayer dollars with the intent of allowing bison access to its lands and that the need to give bison more room to roam is greater now than ever before.

Please share this alert with family, friends and co-workers. Thank you very much for your help!
