I was wondering if anyone knew where to get some good chocolate for Valentine's day, and at a reasonable price.
Thanks!

I had a tasting today of Chocolate Galeria of chocolate and wine - they're inside Days inn - 3305 Santa Rosa Ave in SR. Melt in the mouth organic (I think) but no added sugar. Really good. I don't eat chocolate anymore because of the sugar - this was a big treat. Try it. 321-3015

Infusions Teahouse, (in Sebastopol next to Whole Foods) has some crazy exotic and delicious chocolate. It's not cheap, but I recently tasted a dark chocolate rose infused truffle...heart shaped, decorated with a deep red heart. I would rather have a tiny box of exquisite chocolate than a big box of blah chocolates.

Patisserie Angelica (https://www.patisserieangelica.com/patisserieangelica.html) in the building west of Sebastopol Cinemas. Across the road east of Sebasto's copshop.
They do great truffles and a rich dark chocolate patty the name of which I can't recall. Best pastries in the area. Open ten to five Tuesday through Saturday.
You can get a baker's punch card so the thirteenth (or is it the eleventh?) pastry is free.

I agree that Patisserie Angelica has great chocolates. Also at the very top of the list is La Dolce V. I have never had better, anywhere, ever. There used to be a shop downtown but they closed and now offer their chocolates via the web site only, La Dolce V Fine Chocolates - Mail Order Artisan Chocolates (https://www.ladolcev.com)
Veronica Bowers, the chocolatier, has special pick-up arrangements for locals so you don't have to deal with shipping.

I like Trader Joe's!
they have awesome Belgian Chocolate for a low price!
I know very little about
"fair trade" chocolate however, and that's probably worth looking into.

up until a 3 yrs ago or so, pretty much all non organic chocolate had a trace amount of lead in it. It was discovered, but never uncovered, because Hershey's would lose millions, the mistake had already been corrected, and there was no point in making a giant fuss about horses that had already escaped from the barn. The lead is in us , and that's that.
so when someone says "get the lead out" you can take that seriously!.

Sorry kids, even the ORGANIC chocolate has lead in it. I seem to remember a great big chocolate recall from Dagoba organic chocolate a few years ago. Hershey does own Dagoba now but Hershey is not singlehandedly responsible for some crazy leaded chocolate coverup. Lead is in the environment. It's in the soil, it's in the air. It's quite prevalent in the countries which produce cacao. Pods are harvested from trees grown in soil containing lead and put into trucks burning leaded gas, etc etc. It sucks, but it's true. It's not any one processor or grower or chocolatier trying to slip something past you.
Getting tired of the big company bashing.

So sad! Wine and tea have fluoride, chocolate has lead, fish has mercury. What's a gourmet to do!
Everything in moderation, I guess.
from Wikipedia:
Chocolate has one of the higher concentrations of lead (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead) among products that constitute a typical Westerner's diet, with a potential to cause mild lead poisoning (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_poisoning). Recent studies have shown that although the beans themselves absorb little lead, it tends to bind to cocoa shells and contamination may occur during the manufacturing process. A recent peer-reviewed publication found significant amounts of lead in chocolate.[68] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate#cite_note-67) A review article published in a peer-reviewed journal in 2006 states that despite high consumption levels of chocolate, there is a paucity of data on lead concentrations in chocolate products.
And, monitoring and keeping the lead levels low by the industry is voluntary!?:hmmm:
By the way, many herbal supplements have lead in them as a result of the processing. If you are concerned about this, Consumer Labs does studies of vitamins and supplements to check this out.

They do studies on request or do they test everything?

Looks like they try to sample a handful of popular brands to test for the key ingredient and for possible contaminants.
They offer some info for free, but they want you to subscribe for the 'full monty'. They also certify some brands as 'tested by CL', which would be a boon for the maker of the supplement...a seal of approval. They also test prescription drugs.

And all this being said, we still somehow manage to have the longest lifespans in human history.
