Scientists looking for gravitational waves (ripples in space-time thrown off by super-dense astronomical objects such as neutron stars and black holes) might inadvertently have made the most important discovery in physics for half a century.

I love how these kind of discoveries in the world of science help us tie together the spiritual loose ends that flap naggingly at the edge of the rational mind.

I have long felt that the universe was hologramatic. Here's how I got to that conclusion. I've noticed that skilled practitioners of every divinatory art seem equally able to read "the truth" about your life.

It doesn't matter whether it's an astrologer, crystal ball reader, palmist, I Chingist, Runes reader, numerologist or plain old psychic. It still works--providing they're GOOD at what they do. Observing this, I reasoned that the universe must be hologramatic, since you can take any point of it and reflect the whole.

The same principle also helps explain why there is no single path to enlightenment. If "the truth" is actually information that can be accessed and pursued by anyone regardless of their approach, then it doesn't matter what wrapper you put on it, you can still unwrap it. This, of course, is bad news for anyone who's dogmatically committed to their way being THE way.

I love how these kinds of educated guesses allow people to paint their particular brand of belief over the canvas of reality and somehow justify their own unsupported version of The Truth.

Whatever.

So this means I don't have to pay my mortgage payment any more, right? Nope. Not right. Reality is still reality, cool visions of and novel interpretations of reality don't change the fact that I'm hungry and need some food or that I'm poor and need some money or that I'm horny and want some sex. Know what I mean?

I'm glad there are visionaries and scientists out there who have the time and money to ponder such things. Perhaps this "discovery" will allow travel to the stars some day. In the meantime, I'll fix myself some toast and coffee.

I realize that post reads pretty negatively, however, I do mean what I said above. For instance, it will take such of leap of understanding if we'll ever get to the stars. Super powered starships such as those featured in Star Wars or Star Trek won't do it. It will require a something more like Frank Herbert's notion of "folding space" as featured in his Dune series.

I fully support broad research into the most esoteric theories of reality because great leaps of understanding are unlikely to happen any other way.

Yes, I agree thought is our most powerful reality and we need to learn how o use it! When they can tell us what we are sitting upon, I might be more entertained by the idea but... How has this new perception altered your life? How is it useful, how has it changed other habits of thought or being in this world for you? What limitations have been released? I am looking for growth here, expanding consciousness, evolution. Seems to me the very center of science and spirituality, no? Holograms were entirely fictional when introduced btw, though recalling author or time/space out of reach right now. Have a blessed conscious one, happy thursday show. (thursday has been trash day in all the many places I have lived, what do we take from that?)!

Hmmm Wonderful question! How has this changed your life? How will this change your life?
Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction this goes without saying. The evolution starts here has alwayz been my motto! Once we get a handle on our own galaxy and get an idea of what the creator had in mind we might be able to evolve past this lifetime and into the next! Understanding that each little piece is not just a piece but an exact copy all the way down to beyond what we can see or even assume exists is all mighty to me and gives me verification that even the smallest speck in our universe and beyond has meaning and justification might make you head spin. I mean what this points to is every thought we have is an exact duplicate of the whole. Our universe would be just a larger version of that speck of dust hovering over your head. With the exact same feelings as the whole. The possibilities are endless at his point! This to me would dwarf E=MCSquared. To presume that my thoughts are one with not just everyone but everything that has ever existed and is still to come brings true meaning to my life. I shall walk gently on mother earth and our mother galaxy for one this is certain! To think in terms of what does this have to do with anything and how shall this change my life has to be considered a challenge to me that you even ask such a question. I would presume you are an intelligent individual without doubt but why close your self up and just see things in your own light. The whole point of evolution is to see past your own needs and try to understand the whole.
Imagine if you will you lose an arm or a leg. You know there is an exact copy is storage somewhere, but you have not figured out where the disk is with the copy of it lies. Can you imagine how happy you would be if you found this exact copy and where able to make an exact copy of you limb and replace it without incident? Just sew the little sucker on there. If we can capture time, memory of time, just by looking at it thru a different dimension, a different light to speak, all thought in existence we can not only rerun this like a video, learn from it but also have the ability to create and manipulate our future. If each little speck of dust holds our eternity and we are able to crack this code our lives will be changes forever and we will have evolved! Not only the smallest aspect of our existence will change, but also the largest pieces will start to make sense. The outcome of making whole new universes becomes a tab bit simplified to me. I have alwayz never expected our universe to be the only one. In my opinion there truly cannot be and end! There is no end to how big this place really is. If there were and end I would be surprised. There are just as many galaxies as you can see stars, well way most actually in this universe alone. And just as many universes as galaxies and who knows what is out there that can comfortably fit as many universes as there are galaxies in our universe but Even after this there is a next step bigger and a next step bigger after this and so on and so forth. If we are all just a reflection of this than truth be told we all hold he key to every living thing in existence. If we are alive!!! By shining a light or evolving thru a new dimension and being able to see things from a different angle will be the ultimate goal this lifetime! Just off the top of my head these are only a few basic ingredients to what this will evolve.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
But to answer you question, this probably will not effect you in anyway. It shall effect me in a huge way just because I am into this sort of thing and don’t expect this to have bearings on every living soul. I thank Clancy for the post and on with my day.

Hmmm Wonderful question! How has this changed your life? How will this change your life?

"Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction this goes without saying. The evolution starts here has alwayz been my motto! "

Evolution started millions of years ago, and despite many people being oblivious, evolution has never stopped..it is still on going.
Individuals evolve, species evolve, understanding evolves, science is certainly a part of the evolutionary process.
Perhaps this Hologram 'discovery' is part of the evolution of scientific understanding or perhaps not. That's probably why the question was asked "how does this effect me". In the long run there may be great 'value' in this 'discovery'. Or... it could prove to be nonsense... only time will tell.
The idea that everything 'out there' is just a mass of pixels makes it sound like a vast computer screen. So maybe we're just back to the world being a mass of whirling atoms running both hot and cold (only now on it's an observable scale).
And maybe not !!
Most fantasy ideas eventually came in to physical being.
Does the word 'invention' ring a bell. Invention that an overlooked phenomenon which makes fiction stranger than truth, because fiction ( ideas..fantasy) becomes truth.
So who is to say that we are not just projecting our ideas about time and space out into space and space.... and what we imagine collectively we later 'discover'.
If as the ancients said "it's all an illusion", why does the idea of a holographic universe startle us at all. Just more ho hum stuff to old hands of the business of illusion.
If anything I hope to be around long enough to see what we do to ourselves based on this 'discovery'....how it will be applied as in the question posited earlier 'how is it going to effect me'
So much in your post to respond to Mykil I think I'll content myself with having responded to the opening line only today.
Russ

'Check out the history of holograms.. they've actally been around for a while..
Holography - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holography)

Or if you prefer fictional holos, check out the "Wookieepedia":

Hologram - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki (https://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Hologram)

Holograms in fiction

Many works of science fiction (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction) use holograms as plot devices, especially futuristic uses of them, such as the Holodeck (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodeck) in the Star Trek (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek) series, and the holographic characters Arnold Rimmer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Rimmer) and George McIntyre in the British space sitcom (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitcom) Red Dwarf (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dwarf). The latter even goes so far as to propose hard light (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_light) holography, such as makes up the Holoship (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holoship) in the episode of the same name. Also it is seen in the movie Back to the Future II (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_the_Future_II), Marty McFly (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_McFly) is "attacked" by a holographic shark from the theater Holomax in the year 2015 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015).

How has this new perception altered your life? How is it useful, how has it changed other habits of thought or being in this world for you? What limitations have been released? I am looking for growth here, expanding consciousness, evolution. Seems to me the very center of science and spirituality, no? How about this one.
If you put a tiny insect, like a flea, under a microscope, you'll find out that the flea has tiny creatures crawling all over it and the tiny creatures have tiny creatures and so on,
What if you imagine the earth being one of the tiny atoms as part of a tiny creature that is crawling on a slightly bigger creature that is crawling on a even bigger creature and so on.
To which galaxy would that lead us?

The whole idea is a short cut or clarifying way of saying the following: "as above,so below" and "we are bits of the whole having individuated experience of the one". I still wonder the purpose of this creation and constantly wonder about what we are all about. I imagine that thought alone will be able to alter arm loss story, either grow a new one, or cause a wrinkle in time where jumping back to before the accident repairs arm. I do not know if it is possible to have an idea of G-d's intentions, kinda like the old question of the leaf having knowledge, thought or care about the tree of which it is a part, never mind the forest and the planet. Meanwhile I can only work on myself, increasing consciousness to the best of my ability now.

Evolution is going to be a really really neat thing to explain. Can we see into the future? I am guessing it all depends on where the light is reflecting. Are there only two sides the light can be reflected to? Or is this like a burning a CD or now burning a DVD? We used to only burn one track in one dimension but now the layers are getting burned in about twenty different areas ,although they seem like one track they are at a slightly different angle and burned in a different dimension in order to get more out of one disk each having its own unique dimension!
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
How many dimensions do we adhere too? When a reflection hits one of these dimensions how long will it take the light to reach us? All in all, we are all the same idea is great and we all know everything everyone else does till the light reflects a little different and then we might be in trouble! What happens when the light is shining on a different dimension? How long does it truly take for the light to reach us. And what happens when the light shins on a different dimension? Do we just stand still frozen in time, or d owe die off and start all over again evolving as far as we can till the light hits us again? Kinda like turning the computer off and dumping the cache or memory starting the same program again when it is lit! HA
<o:p></o:p>
Gravity and ghosts have way too much in common, they are both really weak. They both have a problem filtering thru the dimensions appearing at their point. Why is this? Probably what they are made up of, what they consist of. Magnetic forces flow right thru radiation flows easy enough. But why does gravity and spirits have such a problem? They are here, we know this, but why aren’t they coming thru? Why does thought have this problem as well? Thought is easy enough as an individual entity, but set it free and it has a problem Maybe we should shine a light on them and see what happens eh? But what sort of light are we missing?
Ok I need to go to work, way more questions than answers thou eh?

I always appreciate it when someone can take a complicated issue and break it down to something easier to grasp.
I especially like the part where you remind me that the only thing I can really do in the face of all this unknowable stuff is to continue working on myself. Hey, all things considered I've enough work there to last several life times.
I have no doubt that we...as in all that exists..are more connected/related than currently realized. How could it be other ? No wait...let that question pass, or we'll have the thread from hell upon us.
Thanks
Russ

This is something like thinking that God isn't smart enough to create a universe including evolution. A hologram could include the dimension of time, and evolution, as well.

Like the old metaphor of the seed containing the tree, and the tree creating the seeds.. everything has with in it the seeds of everything else.. or is that stretching the metaphor too far?

As I understand it, it's also an established tenet of science that says that everything that we perceive as solid, is basically just patterns of energy.. there is no "real" there, there.

Somebody once described the divination power of the I Ching as simply "resonance", which I sort of think means that if one is attuned to them, one can hear the "echoes" from the future. I dunno.

This thread brings to mind an image of a sand filled egg timer. Neurophysiologically, it is fairly popular to postulate that our perception of reality is manifest as a quite literal hologram located in the middle of the human brain, where the world is projected upside down and backward. Factually, right sided sensations are received by large sensory neurons in the left cerebral hemisphere, with right arm and leg motion is controlled by left cortical motor neurons, etc. The situation is of course much more complex, with a splitting of visual data not by right/left eye but right/left visual field and subsequent crossover, auditory data not splitting at all, smell date from both nostrils merging for reception by a single midline olfactory bulb, proprioception being received in the more mysterious cerebellum, with no doubt more elaborate signal process then similar bilaterality, etc. Imagine the cerebellum of a cat; they make us look like snails.
So if the physical universe itself is charactized as a hologram, then the "NOW" could be seen as the midpoint of the egg timer, where the grains of sand are slowed to almost a complete halt, and theoretically could even be flowing as slow as one grain at a time. It requires very little sand to build a 3 minute egg timer. The universe is a near infinite sandpile?
40 years ago I had the vivid imagery (psychedelically induced, don'tca know) of creation as a massive, old-fashioned wooden loom. The substrate of creation here would correspond to an infinite pile of wool, with the present appearing as the loom magically wove the tapestry of the present and providing a beautiful weaving for a record of time passed. The loom itself operated sans any human hand, floating weightlessly , weaving its own unmarked trail as it danced through time and space. In a way, this image seems more apt then a hologram, which would leave no documentation of the past behind, as far as I can see. I believe I later found the "loom" imagery to be a rather old literary theme, although I don't recall where, possibly Herman Hesse's work.
As much as I love the "new physics", the physicists themselve, and the mental stimulation they provide, I find these purely mathematically and astromonical observations a relatively improverished way to view reality, which is made of much "hotter" and sexier stuff, dont'cha think?

I do see the makings of a fair Sarah Palin imitation (sans wink wink) ! don't 'cha know.

If it takes the likes of us to figure life out for you Ms Terry
then no amount of light, or rope, will ever pull you out of that
black hole....may as well furnish it and set up housekeeping.

I was gonna say, Russ, that that is not all we can't figure out, but maybe I should just speak for myself.. ; )

speaking of black holes, or wholes, whatever.. I sent a long, ramble-y post about a half hour ago, that didn't make it to Wacco, yet, but one I just posted went right up. Maybe because I sent the first one from my mail box, instead of on the wacco site?

Weird.. ; )

I guess it's because I sent some messages privately:

Jeff, Here are some interesting references to the significance of weaving in mythology:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weaving_(mythology)

I once had a (psychedelically enhanced) epiphany of time as a river, while I was looking at, (of course) a river.

To this day, I enjoy looking at the swirls and eddies of the water in streams and rivers; they always seem to represent
some qualities or essence of life. Of course it's a cliche, but the river is ever-changing, yet retains it's essential qualities.
It's flow is unstoppable, (until recently.. ; / )

Plus it's juicier that sand or wool.. <G>

If perchance you are referring to 'figuring out' the likes of Ms. Terry
then perhaps Scott you do speak for more of us than you realize.
