I am happy to announce that LITE Initiatives, the parent organization of Car-Lite and Community Bikes, is Whole Foods Market of Sebastopol's non-profit of the quarter. This means that from January 19 to April 19, every time you shop at Whole Foods in Sebastopol you can help support the work of LITE. Change dropped in the Change-for-A Change box will go directly to LITE and every time a reusable bag is used, shoppers can keep 5 cents or donate to LITE. I hope you will consider doing the latter.

This could add up to thousands of dollars which LITE will use to teach and promote sustainable skills. Pushing bag reuse on all fronts, we hope to beat previous records. We will also be tabling at Whole Foods during this time; please stop by and say hello.

Thanks for reading this. For more information about LITE, please read the blurb below and visit www.liteinit.org. (Yes, it is waaaaay out of date; Joombla locked us out. Our new Word Press website is under development and will be available soon.)Volunteers are needed for a wide variety of tasks, many of which do not require going to meetings.

LITE’s mission is to motivate individuals, groups, businesses and even whole communities to live lightly and more efficiently. A Sonoma County based not-for-profit initially incorporated as Car-Lite, we have been promoting simple, sustainable practices since 2001 - including Car-Free Day on the first Sunday of each and every month. Utilizing a wide variety of lighthearted activities, we have encouraged thousands to drive less, walk and bike more, carpool and take public transit, as well as to consume less, reuse, repair and recycle, buy organic, fresh and local, and to green their homes and businesses.

These efforts also help build community, strengthen social networks and develop leadership. Our programs, Car-Lite, Community Bikes, Green Mentor, Eat-Lite and Zero Waste Sonoma County, also promote safety, sharing, and the development of important DIY - Do It Your Self - skills.

Our new Synergy Sustainability Center, located next to Community Bikes at 4019 Sebastopol Rd, will be a hot spot for learning the skills needed to live more sustainablely. We are now offering classes on bike maintenance and repair, basic home repair skills and greening your home and workplace, In addition, we are planning how-to classes on bike generators and electric bikes and perhaps a film and lecture series.

Working with over 70 different agencies and groups, our 2009 goals are to establish Synergy, expand our youth program and continue to promote Car-Free Day and our other initiatives. Funded by a grant from REI, we are currently working on outreach to local high schools and youth groups.
Motivated volunteers are needed for a wide variety of tasks. Please contact us today: [email protected] or 707 579-5811!
