I don't know that school, however if your child is in the area I would under no circumstances encourage him or her to leave the area for school in the next year or so. The reality is that this "downturn" is just starting. Things are going to get very ugly. I would encourage them to plan on a local college for the next year or two, then we will all know how bad this is really going to be. The chairman of the Fed in testimony before the Senate just called this the mother of all financial disasters. That includes, in case no one was paying attention, the great depression. Transportation, food distribution and social order will be stressed, to say the least.

I went there in the mid 80's so I'm sure it's different. They have an intolerance to latinos and blacks. It's a sububan town and very snobby. But those were the "valley girl" days, hopefully it's changed. If your daughter is going that far, check out Santa Barbara, San Luis Opispo or even UCLA. I have a daughter going to college in Oregon a bit more liberal area and environmentally conscious. I wouldn't put my girl through the baloney of LA plasticism, she's too down to earth for that. No matter what you both chose it's a tough decision and heartstrings are pulled to the brink when she leaves. I get teary eyed writing this as I miss my girl sososososo much.

Its in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles and it gets hot and smoggy in the late Spring, Summer and Fall. Rents are fairly high too. I grew up in LA and went in the opposite direction to get away and ended up at Cal State Stanislaus (aka Turkey Tech) in the Central Valley and then SSU.

I'd agree with the advice to stay as local as possible until the economy stabilizes. Some state colleges are limiting enrollment though now - which they also did way back when I was searching.

I started at CSU Northridge the year after they opened, 1959. It was VERY different then. They had one black freshman in '59. The 60's and '70s were a tumultuous period for the college and by the time I left in '71 (time off for US Army and work) colleges across the country had matured and Latinos and Blacks, and Asians, were highly visible and very active participants in their own education and in political and social development for the college and wider world. CSUN has some very fine programs and majors, with nationwide recognition. To have the best experience, however, the student has to become actively engaged in his or her education and governance. There are outstanding, engaging, and dynamic professors and some who just seem to be passing through. That condition occurs everywhere in the State Universities and the UCs, the private colleges and the workforce and culture at large. The citizen/student has to recognize revelation, and when to fight, when to demand better. The passage through college can be life-changing.
CSUN is one of the state universities. Others in this area are Sonoma State, San Francisco State, Humboldt, San Jose, Monterey Bay, etc.

I didn't attend CSU Northridge, but it was in the their dorms in 1970 that I was introduced to psychedelic drugs, which were even more rampant then at UCLA where I was enrolled, or even in Venice Beach, where I lived. Topanga Canyon, a great place to trip, was just a short distance away, as was Malibu, Santa Monica Beach, and other fun spots. Location, location, location as the realtors like to say. Anyway it was definitely part of my "higher" education.
