Lack of Sleep Linked to Common Cold - washingtonpost.com (https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/12/AR2009011202090.html)
If you get less than seven hours of sleep a night, you're three times more likely to catch a cold. And if you sleep poorly, you're five times more susceptible to one as well.
The participants were then given nose drops containing a virus for the common cold. Five days later, they reported any signs and symptoms of a cold. The researchers also collected mucus samples to test for the virus. After 28 days, the researchers tested the participants' blood samples for antibodies to the virus.

The researchers found that those who slept less than seven hours a night were 2.94 times more likely to develop a cold.

Yes!
Anything that "works" is worth promoting.

I believe the immune system is more fragile then we think it is. Through my years of working as a nurse, articles i've read, patterns i've seen in patients; it has all led me to believe that our immune system is very sensitive to many different elements. Everyone has probably heard from a grandma or grandpa "if you go out side in the winter with a wet head you'll catch a cold". The cold can not make you sick. The cold weakens your immune system so your more susceptible to picking up germs and your system is weakened is it doesn't kill and germs you already picked up. staying warm keeps the immune system happy. Maybe the reason hot tea and soup makes you feel better is because it warms your body and that creates a nice environment for the immune system. It has been shown that stress and lack of sleep weakens your immune system. It has also been shown that certain foods, teas, herbs, sleep patterns, exercises have helped to keep the immune system healthy. I feel that people who keep themselves warm, have low stress lives, sleep enough and eat right probably don't get sick as much as people who don't. It's all because our immune system is actually pretty weak when not well maintained.

it's simple. Take care of yourself and be healthy.

good article sylph :snoopydance:

So true! A few weeks ago I worked myself up into a tizzy of stress over something to do with work and now I'm trying to fight off bronchitis. I attribute my illness to the stress, even though I can't prove it. I tried to exercise, laugh and have a good attitude, but it's difficult when you're "in the moment".

On the other hand, sometimes viruses "just happen". Once someone asked me "why do you need to have this illness, now?", implying that I was sick because somehow I'd unconsciously allowed it to happen or it was my fault.

I felt like slapping her!

But what was more effective against it: Cold Ease, Airborne, or standardized echinacea extract?

They all suck once you got the grip, Jeff, and I'm not sure if you're being "tongue in cheek" here...who came up with that expression anyway? wasn't me....

but to prevent a cold...........Yin Chaio is the best out there if taken at the first sign of body aches, chills, bad jokes....

and rinsing each nostril several times with salt water while in the bath or shower is a very effective way of being able to breath at night and reducing the viral load....

....I find a plastic syringe and a plastic mixing cup to be exceptional tools in this regard...don't make the solution too salty...it hurts but it makes you feel like your surfing too...is one of the best ways to shorten and reduce the misery....

along with chicken soup and spicy noodles, etc...and black pepper if it's mostly sinus. (planetary formulas make a three spice tablet.....echinacea also has a "drying" effect...)

and I'll betcha some liquers do a great job of reducing the misery.....

Obamabella...........cheers and no sniffles.

The best way to treat a sickness is to do the best to prevent it. Sleeping, staying warm, eating right, exercise, drinking plenty of fluids, controlling stress. All of these things should be done even if you don't feel sick. If the bodies defense goes down then the germs take over. If that happens, drink plenty of warm fluids, sleep, take echinacea, SLEEP. When you take cold medications, it just masks the symptoms of the cold so that you can do other things. when your sick, you really shouldn't be "doing other things". You really should be sleeping and taking care of your body so the immune system can repair itself and its system. Echinacea is excellent to take everyday or if your just feeling sick. Vitamin C doesn't do anything once you start to feel sick. If you take Vitamin C everyday then it helps to support a healthy immune system, but once you start to feel sick, the germs are there and you have to sleep and stay warm to keep your immune system healthy. Many of the over the counter "immune system aids" have vitamin C, it's all marketing, don't buy them, they waste your money. Drink a glass of orange juice everyday. Zinc is also another supplement thats good to take for a healthy immune system, however some people say it irritates the stomach. Always eat before taking vitamins to help decrease stomach irritation.

I'm not saying that this will prevent you from ever getting sick, nothing can do that. It just increases your chances of not getting sick.

Germs are everywhere, our immune system is capable of killing most of them but it has to be healthy to work properly.
