As many of you know, President Bush has been authorizing illegal electronic surveillance on U.S. residents. As of today, Congress still isn't holding the President accountable. We are helping the ACLU circulate a petition urging you to contact your Senators; tell them to insist that the Department of Justice appoint a special counsel to investigate. At this critical moment, every voice counts.

Dear Friend,

The President broke the law when he authorized spying without a warrant. Tell Congress to insist that the Department of Justice appoint a special counsel. https://www.alternet.org/images/email/spacer.gif https://www.alternet.org/images/email/aop_button.gif (https://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=76447575&url_num=3&url=https://www.alternet.org/module/ads/?id=72) https://www.alternet.org/images/email/spacer.gifPresident Bush has been secretly authorizing the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on the phone calls and e-mails of Americans and other U.S. residents.

The FBI and the Pentagon have been monitoring and collecting files on peace activists and other advocacy groups. Through Freedom of Information Act requests, the ACLU has learned that the FBI has expanded its definition of "domestic terrorism" to include groups such as Greenpeace and PETA.

Last week, the ACLU filed a lawsuit seeking an end to the secret program of illegal electronic surveillance authorized by President Bush.

But Congress must also hold the President accountable. And here's what you can do about it. Please stand with the ACLU and ask Congress to insist that the Department of Justice appoint a special counsel to investigate any and all crimes committed. Contact your member of Congress now (https://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=76447575&url_num=4&url=https://www.alternet.org/module/ads/?id=72).

The NSA spying program violates our rights of free speech and privacy under the First and Fourth Amendments. As our lawsuit explains, the President has also exceeded the limits of executive authority under the separation of powers principles.

Although President Bush claims he can authorize warrant-less spying on Americans, this surveillance program is simply illegal.

Help protect your rights today (https://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=76447575&url_num=5&url=https://www.alternet.org/module/ads/?id=72). Join our call for a special counsel.

Together, we will see that justice prevails.

Sincerely,
