Having worked in a shop that sells sex toys for 3 years, I have always advised customers to use a gentle and natural hand soap in warm water to clean their toys, especially right after use. Detergents are too harsh and could break down the material. This was told to me by the shop owner who has 12 years experience in the business.

The industry is becoming more aware of the danger of chemicals like phthalates in toys and more companies are making them without harmful chemicals. Silicone is considered very safe, has a smaller pore structure than latex and jelly which means it is less likely to harbor bacteria (in the pores), although if it says silicone it could still be blended with some nasty stuff. When considering a toy purchase, my advice is to ask to smell the toy in the package immediately after opening it. If there is a strong smell, don't buy it. Some of them have a light fragrance added into the material which is not necessarily something to be too concerned with, you will notice the chem smell if it is there. Another option is to use a condom on it. Some clean brands to look for are Evolve, Fun Factory, Dr. Berman, and others that I can't recall.

The Sensuality Shoppe is very aware of this and carries a good selection of clean, quality toys.

That being said, I hope the industry continues to clean up it's act.

bye for now, Lisa

About 15 years ago I had an interview for a contract engineering position with Good Vibrations on Valencia in San Francisco. They were working on next-generation adult toys. It was one of the most educational job interviews I've ever had.
