the thing that bothers me is: I get the digest form and I hit the subject to open up the post, that is fine. But when I am done reading that and want to go back up to where I was (to subject lines only), I am taken to the very beginning again. If there was a way to be returned to the same post so I could just carry on from there instead of scrolling thru all I have seen already, I would be completely content in my life.

That used to be the way it worked (to return to the same subject in the table of contents) however that started to cause technical problems (presumably because of the size of the digest) and the only way I could solve it was to always return to the top of the digest.
