Toys for Tots drop off free raffle ticket

Hello, I wanted to let everyone know As You Wish Hair Design in Sebastopol is a drop off location for Toys for Tots. If you drop off a new unwrapped toy to donate we will give you a free raffle ticket. We will be doing a drawing a few days before Christmas for a few large gift baskets. Only people that drop off toys will be entered in the drawing. Please come by and drop off a toy for a child in need. There are many this year... thanks Kerry

I find myself
feeling sad that I am both a Grinch,and a scrooge when it comes to the "toys for tots" program.
1, I worked for them years ago, in Marin, it was started by a TOY collector who wanted to glean as many antique, and collectible toys as he could(at that time, the toys were not new,) and did not require being in their original boxes.He had no concern for needy folk.
2 we are currently in a GLUT of toys, and toy-style plastics in this country, with wall mart , target etc cranking out all the chinese crap
and military training devices called toys we sell.Goodwill,etc. throw away more weight of toy plastic(99% non re-cyclable) than anything else!
3 I worked at a homeless center(Ritter House in San Rafael,for several years, they have a problem getting rid of the tons of toys donated daily, Homeless people do not want toys, for the most part their kids play with anything thats at hand, or make their own toys like I did when I was kid.
4 most toys these days contain batteries, that parents are almost always remiss to remove and contribute more toxics to the land fill, go in
any kids room these days, and unless you are in a way veagan housold, you will be wading in and tripping over the amazing heaps of toys, that most people never question in terms of the imagery they are providing.
I LOVE toys, and watch out for kids,cause these days,toys are
a portal to create miny consumer droids where we
could have creative genius.

save all the plastic crap for giant art pieces that mock

The Toys for Tots is a charitable program run by the Marines. And it is very nice of you to offer a raffle ticket for a gift basket. Where do your toys go? I was told by one organization collecting for them last year that the toys went to a warehouse in Oakland. I'm not sure where they go next but there are many needy people in Oakland.

If someone would like to donate to local families, another option is to bring your donations to your local fire station. Sebastopol Fire and Santa Rosa Fire work with local churches and charities. At Gold Ridge Fire we collect new unwrapped toys, books, games, art supplies, clothes, blankets and non perishable food items at the Hessel and Twin Hills Fire Stations. The firefighters buy perishable items for Christmas dinners and food boxes from a local church. The firefighters distribute presents and food boxes to local needy families and seniors. We get names and ages from the Salvation Army and local schools. If there are any extras they are donated to local charities that have free Christmas dinners and some are saved for people who have fires and other tragedies during the year. Graton Fire and Occidental Fire have done distributions and Russian River Fire has donated to their local free Christmas dinner. if you are interested, check with your local fire department. Ruth
