I just had lunch at a sushi place that recently opened in Sebastopol. I really enjoyed the food and the service was exceptional so I want to tell you about it.

The place is:

Tosaki Sushi
799 Gravenstein Hwy.

It's located across the street from Big O Tires directly behind McDonald's.

I ordered the lunch special for $10.95 which included a Philly Roll and Unagi Nigri (4 pieces), plus Miso Soup and a house salad, a full meal! The portions were generous and the sushi was very fresh.

I also tried the Hawaii Poki Salad which was excellent!

They also have a combination lunch special served in a bento box (choice of two items) which included Miso Soup, salad and rice (someone else ordered it) and it looked pretty darn yummy. I'll try it next when I'm there.

The ambience was basic, but who cares? I'm not there to eat the tables and chairs.

I plan to go back. The food was good, the price was right!

I agree with all your comments, but I guess ambiance is relative; a friend and I were debating about where to eat last summer after picking blackberries, and wanted someplace fairly funky, since we weren't exactly spiffy. I had seen a mention of Tosaki Sushi here on Wacco, and figured that, since it was a storefront, we'd not be too grubby there. In fact, the place seemed quite elegant, especially compared to the ambiance of the prior restaurant there (Hong Kong Kitchen). I loved it.

Had Linner there today (got off work early).

Really good sushi. Great service. I had the $11 lunch, but with a $10 Nigori Sake I ended up paying $25.65 (I tip 20%).

Enjoyed talking with the owner, Annam. He's from Guanzhuo where I've visited. He commutes from Oakland. He mentioned that in their first month they had lines out the door. Now things have slowed down.

So, if you want to support affordable good quality sushi and other Japanese food, don't hesitate to partake! They won't last long if we don't.

My favorite Japanese restuarant in SR, Cafe Japan, closed recently because they were leased out. Chef Yo is working at the new place, Toyo, in the strip mall at Piner and Marlow in West SR. He's there Tuesday through Saturday.

Oh, and Crab Cake Wednesday's are back at Aioli in Forestville. Or is that Tuesday's?

:thumbsup:I second that emotion! Tosaki Sushi is a great addition to Sebastopol's eateries. There's always plenty of seating available on Friday evenings. They now have two chefs, and their service is great. The last time I was there, the main chef offered me a tasty, bite-sized rice-&-fish treat. He served it with a lovely green tea sauce that he had just invented. He likes to try out new ideas and keep the menu interesting. Yum Yum!

A few of you have raved about Tosaki Sushi already -- if you haven't discovered this restaurant, and I add my voice to the recommendations. I've eaten there 3 times now, and every time has been excellent. I always order the vegetarian sushi combination, which is different every time.

Last week a friend and I ate there to celebrate our birthdays, which happen to be on the same day. When we told them what we were celebrating, the chef came out and said he wanted to make us something special (and vegetarian) that wasn't on the menu, in addition to what we ordered. It was fabulous, and there was no charge for the special creation!

I've never seen more than a few tables in use, and I do hope Sebastopol finds out about this restaurant and starts supporting it.

After hearing all of the good reviews I went to Tosaki Sushi last night with a friend to give it a try. The restaurant was almost full, which I was happy to see.

The experience was not very good. The waitress was very young and made a lot of mistakes. She brought out my friend's sushi order without any ginger or wasabi (it could have been the sushi chef that made that mistake). She got one of his three nigiri orders incorrect.

I ordered a Chirashi which comes with soup and salad. It took 35 minutes to get the order. Before I got any food my friend had been served an appetizer and his sushi order while I got nothing. The Chirashi comes with soup and salad and they were never served. The waitress could have brought those to me while my friend was eating.

The fish was mostly very good, but my friend's appetizer of calamari was covered in a heavy mayo sauce which engulfed the food.

From watching the whole scene it seemed to me that the problem was that the staff and sushi chefs are not very experienced and are making a lot of mistakes because of that. Hopefully they will gain some experience and improve the service.

There is a wonderful new restaurant in Sebastopol - Tosaki Sushi

The food is the best anywhere nearby. Amazingly fresh. The service is personable, friendly, and the menu selections are wonderful. And the prices are great.

I give it a 5 on a 5 * rating.

Only trouble is it no one seems to notice it is there. If you like sushi or Japanese food, in general, please try it. If you like it, please respond publicly to this message. Maybe they will give a WACCO discount. Oh yes, they do give you a card that when filled takes $10 your next meal.

Anyway, enjoy it.

I agree! This restaurant is one of the best Japanese restaurants I have ever eaten in. The prices are the best in the area. The food is delicious and beautifully prepared. The presentation is awesome. Even their house sake is delightful. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

re-post with the ADDRESS please.and, if you know them, the hours, and phone...many waccoids seem to assume that everyone on wacco lives in Sebastopol, and thus knows where everything is...there are at least a few thousand of us that live in Santa Rosa, or Windsor, or Healdsburg, Petaluma, etc., and may not know Sebastopol that well..
thanks

I agree a lovely restaurant, good food, great service. I have been there about 5 or 6 times now alone, with friends, family and out of town visitors. Always a warm welcome and consistently good food.

The family that run the Tosaki Sushi are very nice. Unfortunately they are hidden away behind McDonald's.

They do very reasonable lunch specials everyday.

I'm with you! Tosaki Sushi is a gem and the people who work there are warm-hearted and wonderful. The service is friendly and the food... the best! This has become me and my husband's favorite restaurant in Sebastopol. We just can't get enough.

We went there recently for my husband's birthday and the owner presented my husband with a beautiful, edible work of art. With sauces he drew a delicate cherry blossom tree and then adorned it with what he dubbed as a David roll, (my husband's name). It was fantastic! The staff at Tosaki sushi certainly know how to make you feel welcome. The California rolls are the best... hands-down.

I simply cannot say enough great things about this restaurant. Every one should check it out.

I had tried Tosaki about 6 months ago, and thought it was "so-so", the rice was a bit bland and nothing else really jumped out at me... the sashimi portions were very generous though. We left with a pretty blah impression, though the staff seemed nice.

I finally convinced my better half to give it another try, mostly because of budget and a very attractive Val-Pak coupon which had shown up in the mail ($5 off total bill of $30 or more, $10 off total bill of $60)... we decided to start slow and order piecemeal, so as to sample the wares before being over committed financially, as our impression on reading the (very nicely illustrated!) menu was that the prices were higher here than at either of the other sushi places in town. Had a pair of nigiri hamachi and a pair of the special, super white tuna. The tuna was very nice, the hamachi just good. The rice was nice, the size of the fish average to good. Next, a pair of unagi... very nice, served warm, almost perfect, much better than Sushi Hana's, though at almost twice the price, I'd hope so. We ordered a large house sake, which was nice, though it was expensive, $6.50, as opposed to $5 for the same thing at Hana... finished up with a Hawaiian roll, simple tuna and avo.. not happy with this one, the nori was very flavorful, in a seaweedy kind of way, not to my liking. Also, the outside of the roll was encrusted with sesame seedlets, kinda made the thing into more of a granola roll to my palate.

All in all we were not impressed, Sushi Hana does consistent, smaller portions for a lot less money, a better value in my experience. Sushi Tozai does better sushi, for a little less money, and has much better ambiance.

Then the bill shows up, total bill, $31.20. I proudly present my $5 off coupon, and am told that no, it's not actually the total bill as the coupon clearly states, it's the bill before tax is applied, in my case, $28.85. Sorry charlie, you can't use this coupon. The nickel and diming of a customer who was on the fence anyway pushed me over the decision making edge... I'll not be returning to Tosaki.

How shortsighted of them, I agree. I had a frequent diner card where they stamped each meal or $10 spent (I'm not sure which) to get a free dinner after so many. My card needed one more stamp to be full, and when I presented it, I was told they've discontinued the cards.

This isn't right. I love their vegetarian combo -- that's why I've gone there so often -- but their prices are high, and to discontinue something that encourages frequent dining is counterproductive, seems to me.

The problem for them, as I see it, was the empty tables, not the discounts they were giving those of us who sat at tables.

I hope they're reading this.

Thanks for your posts. If Tosaki Sushi can't put the customers first they will not survive. I was going to try them, but not now, thanks for the warning about their poor business practices.

The sushi chef at Tosaki is the most friendly guy.
His name is Ensen, and he approaches his sushi as an artform.
Unlike other places in Sebastopol. Each Ensen Sushi is a work of art.

Tosaki is a great place to bring a date as they cater to you,
give you little extra things, and their sushi presentations are the best
by far.
The host is named Emily, and she is very nice as well, but Ensen is the main guy, and he is just the nicest.

In my opinion, Tosaki is Sebastopol's Sushi spot because they go out of their way to please their customers.

That's my take on Tosaki, you'll have to visit yourself to see if Im right.
