David Om passed away this morning at Laguna Honda Hospice in San Francisco. He had been growing visibly weaker over the past few weeks, and my strong feeling is that he was ready to go. He was in some physical discomfort due to being confined to bed, but was not in pain. The volunteers at Laguna Honda are from the San Francisco Zen Center, and the standard of care and the quality of caring are very high. He was very well looked after in his final days.

David would be honored more by the recognition and celebration of his life than by the mourning of his death. If there is any justice to existence, which I believe there is, then the conciousness that was David is in a much better place now.

In due course I would like to organize a public celebration of David's life. I would welcome suggestions for a suitable location.

Sorry to hear of his death. I will be out of commission for awhile after the 25th (knee replacement) so may not be able to attend a gathering, but I have a great photo of him I'd like to send to you: 1978, and he had just been helping me replace my water line which was burned in the Creighton Ridge fire; he's nude (although covering his privates) and if I remember rightly has a plastic washbasin on his head. I'll have to dig it out.
