I wrote to the restaurant last week and received the returned note:
"We just opened our latest cafe last week in Healdsburg not too far from you! 206 Healdsburg Ave in the Olive Leaf."

Thanks for passing on this info! A friend took me to the one in San Rafael a couple of weeks ago for my birthday; I'd never been to any of them before and wasn't sure if I would like the raw food. I got a sampler plate, and was absolutely thrilled by how creative the folks in the kitchen are with everything, including some items that I'd never even heard of! Also, the "gratitude" concept, and the question of the day, ensure a much more mindful meal and experience than in most restaurants!

A year or so ago, a friend took me to the Cafe Gratitude in San Rafael. It was quite the bustling place and the food was great. My one complaint, and my friend's as well, was the unexpected response we got when we asked for more dressing for the salad. We were told we would be charged I believe 3 bucks for more dressing. This seemed like an unnecessary charge given that the salad was already very expensive. Perhaps they have done away with that practice, but it was enough for me to not return since.

:Yinyangv: I also love Cafe Gratitude's food ... and as a person with a lot of years in the restaurant business, I can see how you might feel negative about paying extra for more salad dressing (a very cheap thing at most restaurants.. comes in a gigantic cardboard box with a plastic lining, and is probably not the most healthful stuff to be eating ;)
Everything at Cafe Gratitude is organic, much is raw, and it's labor intensive to convert that organic raw material into the delectable delights that grace their menu.. so I can see how they might ask $3 for something that, at another place, might be something like "a side of hummous" or whatever.
Costwise .. everyone has their own perspective, but even without considering that Cafe Gratitude's food is nutritionally superior and all organic ... within the Bay Area it only costs maybe $$ or $$$ on the scale of $ to $$$$$ which you often see in restaurant guides.
-And since this site is about community, I guess it wouldn't hurt to think about the fact that spending your $ with Cafe Gratitude is a vote in support of a business which embodies amazing community values; which values its employees, encourages them to value themselves and each other; supports local farmers, etc.

btw, was that $1.50 each for extra dressing ?

It's a shame a few bucks keeps you away --- or was it something else?
Just hazarding a guess -- that your previous restaurant experiences included all you can eat salad dressing of the cheap commercial variety?
And maybe you're evaluating Cafe Gratitude as-if they're witholding something very inexpensive, whereas the reality may be a little different.

I wonder what would've happened if you'd have said
"I'm used to getting extra salad dressing free at other places"

warm wishes,
