I am a past endocrinology nurse. I am a strong believer as the endo doc I worked for that Herbal remedies DO NOT WORK. The best thing is to get an endocrinologist to do the appropriate labs and than proceed with the correct medicine of thyroid replacement.

sort of related to the thread listing medical clinics ... you can be treated for conditions like hypothyroidism at the clinic at the Santa Rosa Junior College. in order to use the clinic, you just have to be signed up for a class. i think the clinic fee for a semester is $14. a 1-unit class is $10 to $20.

also i think this can be treated at the Jewish Family Clinic in Rohnert Park.

hi,
If you are still looking for information here is a bit. I don't know how long it took you to get diagnosised but hopefully not as long as it took me. I went 10 years with doctors not listing to my symptoms or looking for Autoimmune disease. Thyroid problems are very common and yet are still left overlooked.
There is a couple of great books to check out. "the complete thyroid book" by Ain,and Rosenthal. "living well with Hypothyroidism" by Mary Shomon, she has thyroid disease and has lived it researched it and her books are fantastic. You can also call her for consultations but she is not a doctor. She is very compassionate and helpful and also inexpensive. She also has a great web site that has update information and research. There is a couple Richard Shames and Karilee Shames in Marin who have written a book that is good too. "Thyroid Power" They have a clininc and maybe able to help you with bio-identical homones. If you can get your thyroid balanced it can make a world of difference. I think its important to read a good deal about your options before you meet with any doctor. Most Doctors don't really know how to treat Thyroid problems beyond cookie cutter methods. You are best served by finding someone who will listen to your symptoms more then just read your test results. The "normal ranges" may not be what is normal or healthy for you so you really need someone on your side. My doctor is Teri Turner here in Sebastopol. She is the one who finally diagnosed me. She has been great for me and is open to all aspects of medicine and healing. I feel very lucky to have found her. I wish you the best of luck and great health!!! Take Care, dev

Good advice. Also if you need some on-line, moral suport and a great resourse for information about thryroid disease, you may wish to check out a yahoo group called ThroatChakra. Most of us have had considerable experience with thryroid reated problems and we this is where we share our knowledge and frustrations.

Hi,

I recently learned that when one has Hashimoto's it often means that one's adrenal glands are also out of balance. The good news is that by balancing the adrenal glands, one can potentially recover from Hashimoto's, which heretofore I had understood to be something you were stuck with for life.
This doesn't rule out the importance of taking the thyroid substitute in the meantime. I mention this only to suggest that you consult with your MD about checking your adrenal function, as well, and perhaps adopting the dual approach to remedying the situation.

Best of luck with it all!
Andrea

Hi Carolyn,
My wife is a Naturopathic Doctor and very well versed in Hosh. Thyroiditis. She did her clinical internship in women's medicine and chronic disease. She takes a truly holistic approach and has great success using both natural and conventional methods- the key here is holistic, she doesn't simply substitute botanical remedies and supplements for thyroid medications- she helps support your body back to a more balanced state-
She is in Sonoma at Sonoma Naturopathic Medicine- Her name is Rebecca Habansky Porrino, ND. You can find her on the web.
She's a good resource.
In health,
Marcus
