You are receiving this e-mail because you have expressed an interest in preserving the creek corridor and associated wetlands near Graton. We are announcing the formation of a new group, Friends of Atascadero Wetlands. We represent a community grassroots effort to encourage recognition of the immense value of these unique wildlands and to promote, in good faith, their permanent preservation and protection.

California has lost more than 90% of its historic wetlands, the largest loss of any state in the nation. Wetlands provide valuable wildlife habitat, provide spawning areas for a number of fish species and serve as a resting and nesting site for local and migratory birds. Wetlands function to improve water quality, increase water quantity and provide flood control and storage.

The creek and wetland environment surrounding the Graton area has high biologic resource value. These rare lands contribute significantly to the environmental health, beauty, and quality of life of our community. As a group, we protest any use of these lands that would result in their degradation or loss, including the conversion of sensitive riparian or wetland environments to development or agriculture. We support the protection of these lands in a natural state for the future benefit of all residents of Sonoma County.

We will keep you posted on developments associated with the recent trenching of these wetlands. (You should have received an email Update from us on this matter on August 13.) In the meantime, one action that you can take is to sign the Defenders of Wildlife petition to the State Water Board supporting strong protections for our wetlands and riparian areas -- and the plants and animals that depend on them to survive. Please click on the link below to sign the petition.

*Urgent action is needed because the deadline for comments is tomorrow, Monday, September 8.*

Dear Friends of Atascadero Wetlands,

Many thanks for this post. I love and appreciate our precious Atascadero daily! It truly is an all important eco-environment for the wild life that live and travel, migrating through this amazing wetlands corridor. Allowing and promoting this land to sovereignly continue to express itself as it has for all this time is perhaps an educational process to raise human awareness because future generations are entitled to it and it is our role as stewards to see that this is so.

Birds of a Feather,

Linda Ann
