Extremists Attack McCain as 'Pawn of Jews'
While continuing their racist attacks against Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive
Democratic presidential nominee, white supremacists and anti-Semites opened up a
similar line of attack against his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, claiming
that he is a "pawn of the Jews" and an enemy of the "white race."

Religion in the Campaign: New Concerns
In the run-up to the Democratic and Republican national conventions, new concerns
about the role of religion in politics emerged. With multifaith gatherings, faith
panels, invocations and other events scheduled, "it's excessive, it's aggressive and
it's beyond saying 'vote for me because I'm a person of faith,'" said Abraham H.

In Denver, Coffee Sleeves Tout Diversity
In time for the Democratic National Convention, coffee houses in Denver received
thousands of insulating cup sleeves printed with a message from ADL on valuing
diversity. The sleeves were conceived and designed as a public service by local
high school students who participated in ADL's National Youth Leadership Mission to
Washington, D.C. The sleeves will be available in more than 2,000 coffee shops
across the city.

Congress Enhances Campus Hate Crime Reporting
New legislation will give students and parents a more complete picture about hate
crimes and safety on campus. ADL took the lead in coordinating support among dozens
of civil rights organizations for the law's swift passage in Congress.

In the latest sign of a burgeoning relationship between far-right and Muslim
extremists, a small Muslim organization that promotes anti-Semitic conspiracy
theories and Holocaust denial held a gathering in Baltimore attended by prominent
domestic extremists.

Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus condemned an anti-Semitic attack on the Vilnius
Jewish community center. Vandals painted swastikas and depictions of concentration
camps on the building along with anti-Jewish messages.

Catholic Educators Bear Witness
Catholic school educators gathered in Washington, D.C. for Bearing Witness, an ADL
program run in partnership with the Catholic Church that teaches about
anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, and how that history can be effectively taught in the

NJ: High Holiday Scheduling Conflict Resolved
Acting on concerns from ADL and other organizations, the Edison, New Jersey school
board rescheduled a referendum scheduled to take place on the Jewish High Holidays.
"We are heartened that the district recognized that scheduling the vote on Rosh
Hashanah effectively created a separate and more burdensome voting procedure for
Jewish residents of Edison," the League said in a statement.

Local Seminars Emphasize Communal Safety
In Texas and in Florida, ADL held security seminars for religious and community
groups. In Austin, 81 representatives of 32 religious institutions attended a
seminar, which included sessions on institutional and school safety. In Palm Beach
County, more than 30 representatives of churches, synagogues, mosques and sectarian
communal organizations learned about balancing the needs of openness and being
security minded.

Vandals spray-painted anti-Jewish slogans on a synagogue in Long Island. There have
