Hello members... I have worked in the industry for about 22 years, and for the last four years, now operate my own agency. I started the agency without any outside help, business loan, etc. Overhead is sometimes a little overwhelming but I've ALWAYS paid company financial obligations before paying myself. If you have any advice as to how I can obtain help via 'private grant funding' it would be greatly appreciated. Since my agency is NOT a non-profit corporation, eligibility for federal grant funding is not allowed. Thanks.

The Sonoma County Library in Santa Rosa has the Foundation Center's grants database, which is a tremendous resource. They have a dedicated computer for it. They also do workshops in grantseeking <link> (https://www.sonomalibrary.org/programs/GrantClasses.html). There is one coming up on the 6th. As for specific grants for detective agencies, got me. But there may well be grants for woman-owned businesses, etc. Obviously, try different angles when you search.

Under federal law, both public grant programs and private foundations can only make grant awards to entities exempt from federal taxation under IRS Code Section 501(c)(3)--nonprofit public benefit or religious organizations.

If yours is a for-profit business, you're not grant eligible except in very specific cases which are always tied to a public benefit purpose (such as grants to farmers to improve the impact of their operations on water quality, for example).

You may be eligible for low-interest small business loans, and may get a competitive preference for being a woman-owned enterprise. I don't know about such things. I know there are some public entities which give a bidding preference for service contracts to minority or women-owned companies, but I can't imagine a city, for example, hiring a detective agency.

Good luck...
