The message posted at Recycle Sonoma was intended and requested to be private to that group. Although clearly a lot of people are involved, I feel that their request should be honored. I have removed the message from this site. Please be respectful of others.

Any floggings will be frowned upon. IE..Public whining and crying on
other lists(Wacco/CL/Other Free lists etc)...

This entire situation is pretty interesting to me. They won't let you discuss this issue on their list or you are thrown off AND they get to control us talking about it here too.

I wonder if I will get kicked off for discussing it in a private email with another member of that group this morning?

Seriously, this is a group open to anyone, so is there really the need for secrecy about this message? Also, should/do they have the right to tell us that we can't talk about it elsewhere?

I agree that we should be respectful of others and they can start the ball rolling in that direction.

I think you should restore the message to this forum where it is 'safe' to discuss this issue without fear of being thrown off the list.

I don't think I am 'flogging' or 'whining' or even 'crying'. I am curious. I think that the entire issue would be better handled if discussed openly.

I have enjoyed being a member of that group, I have given and recieved things, I have even promoted it on my radio show. However difficult their position is, the way they handled it doesn't work for me.

Ah well, they will probably throw me off anyway for posting here.

Good points all, Veronica. If you get kicked out for exercising your right to express an opinion, as I did, just get a new yahoo ID and rejoin.

Hi everyone - I think the mistake in the first post was copying *here* what was posted *there* - that's just plain bad netiquette. I don't think there's a problem discussing what's going on but it isn't fair to repost someone's actual words in another forum without getting their permission and inviting them to participate. i am not directly involved other than being a member btw. I just agreed that it wasn't cool to repost here. Would you want the same done to your posts, broadcast and critiqued somewhere else without your knowledge? That's all!

Hi Karen, thanks for the dialog. You wrote:

but it isn't fair to repost someone's actual words in another forum without getting their permission and inviting them to participate.

I feel that a moderator posting 'rules' for the entire forum is quite different than a member making a posting.

The moderators of the Recycle Sonoma group denied members the opportunity to discuss the issue within the group. I want to discuss it openly and publically within the group where all of the involved parties can participate, but I am not allowed to.

This is just one of the ways that they phrase the idea that if you don't like what they have to say, then leave:

Please leave the group if you don't like it and move on. Life existed before this group and it will continue after you leave.

I will state again that I like the recycle/freecycle concept and I have participated in it from both the giving and receiving ends.

I don't know why the moderators are getting so much hassle from the community. That must be very frustrating for them.

Their posting created more questions than it answered. I believe that it also turned people away from their group. This means that items that would have gone to good use are likely headed for the landfill.

The whole thing makes me sad for the community. Thankfully, we have an option here at Wacco.

I won't give up on the concept. I am a member of the City of Sonoma recycling board, but it is very small so far. I am just going to use Wacco in the meantime and see how it shakes out on the other list.

Great News!!!

"Due to the negative effect of Mr Ecycle's email, he has voluntarily left the group and is no longer a moderator."

This is an interesting turn of events, but Why? The moderators brough him in to help them and now he is out..... If his actions were with the moderators blessing, then why is he leaving???? Just because his email had negative effects? Didn't they see that coming?

If the initial email had come from the entire moderating team AND the list owner, it would made more sense anyway. This latest comes from the List Owner who asks that we be patient and that more information is on its way.

How about just telling us ONCE what you want the group to be like and then answering questions publically to flesh out how that will look? The people that grove with you will stay, some will leave, and try as you might, you will have some 'deadwood/lurkers/resellers/and otherwise annoying to you' folks.

We want peace on earth and we can't even manage to have a group where we give things away for free. What happens when we get to bigger issues??

This is now starting to really confuse me. I spoke about it today on the radio program. I left off what specific list I was speaking about, but I tried to frame the entire thing within Non Violent Communication. I am not the best at this yet, but I am trying.

What is the need here for the moderators?????

To have a smoothly functioning group that allows for otherwise unwanted items to be reused and stay out the the landfills.
I think that is pretty close.

What is the need for members????
To be treated with respect comes to mind first, but I think it is better stated as To have a smoothly functioning group that allows for otherwise unwanted items to be reused and stay out the the landfills.

Meaning, we are on the same page here.

This entire situation is/was an amazing opportunity for a person skilled in NVC to guide us, as a group, through this process. Maybe it could still happen. As I said, I am new to this process although I believe in it. In this case, every time I think of a need that a moderator has, it seems like the same need is present in the members. Either I am TOTALLY getting it :) or not.....

We all want respect, we all want appreciation, we all want to see our planet heathy, we all want to join together to make our communities better, we all want to feel safe and secure in our online communites, and we all want to be able to provide for our families as well (resellers have needs too)

How do we go about meeting those needs WITH each other and not at the EXPENSE of each other? (this includes members and moderators getting their needs met)

Starts with communication.

It is indeed a nice concept that moderators and member should work together to uphold a common purpose or vision, but the matter of fact is that as a moderator, you will never be able to please all members, and, hence, have to live with the heat that might come your way in times of disagreement (right, Barry, as you just experienced it with me after deleting my post...;)?!?).

It takes a certain personality to buffer, manage, and divert that heat appropriately without letting the own ego react or get hurt. I would encourage those of the Recycle Sonoma moderator team who seem to be fed up with the responsibilities involved, to ask for assistance from the community, and maybe take a break from it for a while. It may very well not be as necessary to impose all that control, as it sometimes appears. Systems have a tendency to self-regulate into harmony when left in peace.
I am sure Recycle Sonoma will grow and flourish just fine (once new members can join again).

We are all learning, that's for sure. I think Recycle could learn something from our own Barry the Greatmoderator. Here is a model role model for moderators. A moderator's moderator. I feel the respect he has for us as a community and as individuals when we come to him with this and that. Thank you Barry!

Don't get me wrong. I, also, think that Barry is doing a fine job here on his waccobb.net project. Thank you for that....

The discussion that evolved here was not about wacco, but about the Recycle Sonoma group situation.

I am glad to hear that the character that Mr Ecycle experimented with has withdrawn again, because that path did not seem helpful.

I am suggesting that maybe some of the moderators of Recycle Sonoma use this opportunity here to express and discuss what they need, because I assume that many waccoites are also recyclers...this might be a nice opportunity for exchange, discussion, and feedback...

My 2 cents;
Ingo

And don't get me wrong, either. Recyclers (of either group) are welcome to use Waccobb.net to discuss anything they want to, including their Recylcle group. I just thought it was going too far to re-post the message from the group that seemed to be asking to be kept private.

And, of course, you are welcome to use our For Sale/Wanted/Free category (https://www.waccobb.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=8) for your recycling needs!

Well I just got the latest post from RecycleSonoma. They have CLOSED the list! It's gone! I am bummed - I love that list. So, I went right to freecycle.org and found there is a group in Sonoma:
https://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sonoma_Freecycle/

So, all of us that like the freecycle idea can join that list - I already did. We can help it grow.

Spread the Word!

I was just browsing the Yahoo Groups that come up when I search for 'Sonoma'. I found this. I wonder what it even means? When I have signed up for Yahoo Groups, I have only given my email address. Have any of you been required to give more information than that?

Veronica, I just did a search on Sonomacounty as one word in Yahoogroups and the first group to come up is the new improved Recycle-SonomaCounty which is up and running with many of the same people and more seem to be coming in as the word gets out.
