I'm beginning to research pellet stoves and wonder what features
to look for (and avoid). If you have used a pellet stove, please reply:

size and brand of stove
heat efficiency of stove throughout house
energy costs: pellets, electricity
what makes the stove noisy or quieter?
odors of pellets or smoke from burning fuel?
local source you recommend for buying a pellet stove and/or fuel?

Thanks for any input,
Laurie

I haven't used a pellet stove. I'm shopping for a woodstove, and have rejected buying a pellet stove. I have heard comments from a few owners, and pellet suppliers, that the supply of pellets is limited. Pellets use the same ingredients as some lumber products. As the price of lumber spirals up, so does the price and the availability of pellets.

A commercial supplier of pellets tells me that due to their limited supply allowance from the mills, they have to put their customers on an advance order list. Last I heard they weren't accepting new clients.

I heard all this last year, so maybe things have changed.

if you loose power on a regular basis during the winter, a pellrt stove is not a good idea

You can never tell. Pellets stoves are cleaner than wood stoves for sure. Some counties only allow for pellets stoves to be installed at this point. Wood stoves however you can burn anything you desire and when the pellet source runs dry you can hit the sides of the local mountains and get some dead wood and stay warm. Pellet stoves also require electricity to work. If you live somewhere where the power goes off often you might have a problem. They are now coming out with battery backups which are nice! In my Professional opinion when it comes to pellet stoves leave them and stick with the new and improved wood stoves they have in this day and age! Pellet people are strange!!!!!!!!!!! You may drop by and talk to Don Ricke at two guyz with a big truck if you really are interested in an ear full, he won’t shut the f… up!!! Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays he is around he is beyond knowledgeable when it comes to this subject! Pellet stoves also are famous for breaking down when you need them the most!! :2cents:
