Hello folks,

I'd like to ask for some ideas of what and where a family of three can go for vacation, maybe a week or so? Our daughter is 14 and that presents some challenges because of her budding, head long personality.

We live in Santa Rosa, California and we're welcoming all types of ideas, even if they might seem a little 'wacked.' We have only through the 25th of August to enjoy this escapade so we are in a hurry to have fun.

Thanks ahead of time,

Mike

There are some great deals on Hawaii lately. Some friends just had a blast in Oahu, using the Lonely Planet and the Oahu Revealed guidebooks. I've never been there, but now I'm dying to go. Maybe flights are all booked up by now, but if I had time off, I would try to go to Hawaii! Just one example:

Closer to home, Mendocino is wonderful. Don't miss Fort Bragg and Glass Beach. Great scenery all the way. Stop for lunch in Booneville and learn about their made-up language, 'Boontling'.

Going South, a trip to Monterey, including the aquarium, Carmel and other quaint seaside towns would be delightful.

The Gold Country is fascinating. Get a guidebook and read the history of every little town as you enter. Columbia is colorful with old-style western buildings and folks in period costume, and a great candy store...

Then, there's Yosemite! I think the smoke should be cleared out by now...
Just a few ideas.

Copco Lake, near Shasta = great.

When my kids got to that "awkward age" we took them away from it all. That gawkiness is pricked and keen when there are peers around who are suffering the same "stupidity". Removing those of the same age to more remote areas did wonders for our kids' self image, gave a breathing space away from it all type of thingy. And the natural challenges there help build self confidence, or kills them, much like parents! Opps.

Good advice, Lenny! If I have one regret in life, it's that I didn't take my girls camping or backpacking enough. There might still be time to organize a memorable camping trip.

Drop the guilt as we ALL have that regret because out there is where it's at for us all. When you do organize it, you be the Queen and they do all the food preparations, cooking & cleaning and you get to sit in The Chair! And make them laugh.
