I have my nephew come up here to the ''country" from the East Bay every Summer. He is now at that tender age of prepubescence. I'm sure he would like to be with other 13 yr olds, but he is a sweet boy and will hang with his aunt for a week or two.
Any ideas for fun activities?
Here is his email about what he'd like to do:
'go look at animals and stuff i'm into lizzards now i have two bluebeilies and like 5 baby bluebelies and im planning on releasing them soon im also into gokart racing and motrcycles.
so i dont know'
Any go-cart tracks around here? I'm thinking a horseback ride might be fun. We did Safari West last Summer.

Seems like it could be fun also if you got together a program based on his fascination with lizards.

Use the internet to look up stuff both knowledge and local stuff.

Just an idea.

Horse back riding would be fun as well. Are there still any horse camps around?

Beach is always nice of course. Especially if you can go with someone his age.

Sebastopol has a 1st class skate park.
there are still some work parties to get it ready. (like this saturnday)
Great place to make new friends!

I would suggest, besides catering to him and HIS likes, offering NEW things for him to do. Awkward age, to be sure, but river rafting is kewel for all ages, the skate park was mentioned for peer socialization, observatory on Sugar Loaf, which includes hiking, and swimming at Ives never hurt. Wednesday Night Market in Santa Rosa is more stimulating than Sunday Farmer's Market in Sebastopol, at least for a 13 year old. I trust you have a garden? Have him go water it early in the morning and leave him alone out there. You might leave him alone at times, just cause he might need that to, depending on his type. The Apple Fair can be boring to his age, but there may be SOMETHING there that will help him pass the time.
But if you want to thrill him:

Taking Lenny's point one farther: most kids (people in general) really are wired to be useful, and to learn from others. Getting some meaningful help from your nephew along with the fun stuff would, IMO, make the visit even better for both of you.

Mr. Wolf is a great guy, and I am not sure if he still does "tours" of his place, but probably! He has quite a variety of reptiles, as well as other animals. I used to take my son there 15 years ago! Great educational opportunity! Here is the info I found on the internet about him...

Sonoma County Reptile Rescue Al Wolf Sebastopol 707-829-8152 Including venomous and non-venomous capture and relocation.

Good luck, and have fun!

Hi - You might want to look into the Petaluma Wildlife Museum - https://www.petalumawildlifemuseum.org/

They've got lots of lizards there.

A fun and educational (and cool, on a hot day!) thing to do is to take a tour of the Bodega Marine Laboratory; check their web site for times and other information.

And don't forget that Doug (Decterlove on Wacco) has a whole lot of snakes to play with!

Hi;
I live on a community where we value Nature experiences for young people
It would be an Awsome place for a "lizard release" I could show him how to make a lizard catcher out of a piece of oat-grass ,or put a western blue belly fence lizard to "sleep" We have a nine year old here who is quite into lizards as well( I'm not over them myself at 61) we also have a "full on" pond, with frogs, etc. If you sign a release, I could host you to take walks here and enjoy Nature.

Absolutely! My nephew doesn't demand to be entertained all the time. Right now he's cooking up something in my kitchen of his own creation. But his visit is an excuse to me to play and do new things, too!

For reptile-related activities, check out the North Bay Herpetological Society at: https://www.nbherps.org/

The aforementioned Al Wolf of Reptile Rescue is associated with this bunch. I notice on their website that they're having a talk on rainbow boas (with actual boas present) on August 26 in Sebastopol.
