I recently had an argument with my brother over global warming. I rested my case that the earth is indeed getting warmer based on Al Gore's assertion that over 90% of the world's scientists had agreed on this fact earlier in the decade.

Then my brother said, "Read the facts," and sent me a link to the American Physical Society's web site. The article stopped me dead in my tracks and left my mouth hanging open. It does indeed appear that the earth is getting cooler again, and has for nearly a decade.

Being a "greenie," I am committed to responsible stewardship of the planet. I will continue to reduce my carbon footprint when I can. But I'm also not about to continue believing the sky is falling when it isn't. Clearly mankind has impacted the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. But it may not be doing quite what so many of us thought.

Check out the article. I warn you, it's long, extremely technical and scholarly. I don't understand much of it. But I get the point. The folks who claimed the earth is warming may actually be wrong.

Decide for yourself what this means and what, if anything to do about it. It's worth a community discussion, though. See what YOU think:

I can't remember when, but a few years back there was an article in The New Yorker about the results of the "Bird Watching Day" which occurs each year in the British Isles; many of the human inhabitants take the day to observe what birds they see in their areas, and the results of these observances, over a few years' time, showed that many bird species had been moving north, presumably to relocate to the climate that suited them thermally. One possible deleterious result of this was that the birds' food supplies might not be moving north with them, or at the same speed.

Yes, but on the other hand, there is personal experience and observation of climate change. I have lived in Sebastopol since 1987 and, until a few years ago, we routinely had one or(maybe) two heat waves, in August, otherwise, the weather here was 70's/80's and predictably delicious semi-coastal weather. People who live here do not have air conditioning, except for high end custom homes. I am a realtor, so I am aware of that stuff.

It has been changing every year in the past 5 or so that I have noticed until, this year, we have had two heat waves per month since April. . . .that is just fact, my friend. I may have to get air conditioning just to make sure my dog does not have heat stroke in the house when I'm at work.

Just my two cents worth...I am now having clients ask me about it because when I put them in a home here 5 years ago, the weather was what I said it was, and now, it's clearly not and they are not happy about it.

I tried to read it, and don't understand enough to be able to agree or disagree with you. I also don't know the site so I can't trust or believe it without confirmation from someone who understands it and can confirm it. I have forwarded the article to a physicist I do know and trust, and will get back to you with her reply...

It is a fact that the planet now is hotter than we have ever experienced it in our life times. some geologists make the point that this is "NATURAL" and has happened repeatedly throughout the centuries, so heck we're in a fire already why not throw gasoline on it!
This is like the George bush hornet nest technique, shoot it down!
The neo cons will continue to hire scientists to say that nothing has happened, uh meanwhile, anybody seen the north pole??
you would have to be stupid(and a lot of us are) not to admit that we are in serious trouble, some of you won't get it till you can't drive to S.F. because the water is over the freeway. oh well, at least we'll see each other eye to eye in the food-lines.
bye the way, while you are pumping up denial, did you know that the firefighters, police and hundreds of people who lost families in 911 were all protesting in N.Y. thousands of people on the streets wearing t shirts
that say 911 was an inside job? all the cops and Firemen SAW bombs in the basements, and people coming UP from there with horrible burns. do you understand that our govt.and the news agencies have been usurped by the neo -cons and the c.i.a. all the evidence to bust the c.i. a. (for running their operation on drug money , and sparking phony wars with turncoat opperations) was in the BUILDING No.7 that was demolished 12 minits after it was announced on british tv whoops.. that is the smoking gun (available on line)
many have died getting this information public. a couple of days ago they cracked down on the borders, and people seen carrying lap-tops will have their laptops confiscated indefinately to investigate for subversive activity.
The internet is toppling on huge decisions that would allow big corperate interests to control content.
get the truth around soon, because the news agencys are rigged
and we may not have this venue forever.
for your sake I hope the globe is cooling I hope suv's are a good idea
and the Malls will bring happyness, I'd like to live in a world without record breaking catastrophic hurricanes, floods tornados etc.
Buckminster Fuller was on to this and wearning people 30 years ago
Look out your window, blue sky, birdies tweeting, hey everything is o.k.
(by the way global warming can cause cooling, so don't get confused by local weather) look up the draughts in africa.
Have a nice day nico

The article you linked to has not undergone any scientific peer review, which is stated right up front on the article. The author is highly controversial.

And, the editors of the newsletter added this disclaimer about the article: "The following article has not undergone any scientific peer review. Its conclusions are in disagreement with the overwhelming opinion of the world scientific community. The Council of the American Physical Society disagrees with this article's conclusions."

This has been a great discussion! My thanks for the thoughtful replies and the additional light some of you have shed--particularly for the one by Zeno Swijtink. (If I could figure out to do the WACCO gratitude thing, I would...)

I was snowed by the technical, scholarly piece by the contgrarian scientist, and should have investigated further than reading his article.

Anyway, I have since responded back to my brother, and provided him with links to the other (and prevailing) view of the scientific community. It will be interesting to see how he responds. Being a right-leaning conservative, he may simply be looking for evidence that validates his point of view. Which, of course, is human. We all do it. It takes guts and wisdom to openly inquire beyond that which merely supports your point of view.

Blessings to all in this warming world.

(Except in 2008, which is cooler, I've learned...)
