A Chance to Help a Fellow Human
This morning I was driving back from a short errand in downtown Santa Rosa, when I saw my friend José walking. He told me he had no place to be during the day. It was too cold to sit on his rock down by the creek to read and share his wisdom with those who come. He could only walk. As we talked, rain began to sprinkle my windshield. He laughed, and pulled the folded umbrella with the carved duck's head on the handle from under his arm-- and told me: "El Pato (the duck) is happy."
That is the spirit of José. Smiling about the duck on his umbrella being happy with the rain, as he walks about with nowhere warm and dry to relax and share himself with others (he says there are too many crazy people in the shelters and food kitchens).
I have written about José here once before, asking if anyone has a place he might live/sleep/hang out/keep warm. A couple of you responded, for which I am grateful, but nothing has worked out (yet).
I am expanding my plea. I give José work in my garden in the season, and we put up lights last week, that sort of thing. He needs more. He needs the support of a community. José is a gentle saint, walking the streets to keep warm. José is from El Salvador, has walked the world, and seen much. He is a trained nurse and herbalist (Latin American herbs), been to law school, and more. At 57, he is more impacted by the wet and cold, and tiring of his outdoor life.
We feel powerless when the State executes a worthy man, or we wring our hands about "The homeless Situation." Here is a chance to take action and help one real Human. I am asking you to offer him work (help you with your Spanish-- his English is pretty good, help you move, garden, clean the garage, put up or take down Christmas decorations, take care of animals), a place to stay (he is now in a garage in the JC neighborhood with no heat or bathroom-- for which he is grateful), or simply MONEY. You can communicate with me about him, or offer him work or a home by leaving a message for "José Hernandez" at the Morgan Street Day Center message service at 525-0226 (they will just answer with "hello").
If you would like to contribute money to simply make the one man's life easier, please send it to me at the address below. It is not tax deductible, and he may never know you sent it. I guarantee everything I receive will go directly to José's comfort and well-being. . .with a bit of mine added.
Thank you for reading, for offering support or sharing abundance, and for whatever other help or suggestions you have to offer. I wish each and every one reading this a Very Warm and Loving Season, regardless of the apparent insanity of the world around us.
