I've found a mantis near Cotati. It looks different than the larger one I caught last September. Having trouble identifying it from library books and Internet sources, partly because I'm not sure whether it's a nymph form or just a small adult. Any mantis experts out there want to take a look at it?

some people are breeding them now as a hobby....could be an escaped hybrid........

Praying mantis insects are harmless to humans. They can be raised indoors or released outdoors to reduce the number of pest insects in your yard and garden. Praying Mantis Insects make no noise, they have no foul order, they are very clean and are easy to raise in captivity in simple plastic containers with a screen or mesh material lid! No dirt or plants are required inside the mantis container, simple plain white paper towels are used to line the floor of the container and a small stick or mounted screen can be used as a perch! Food is readily available in captivity one form of which is offered here!

Had a girlfriend years ago who raised a few. . Lots of plants in the house and she played among them and rest on the finger and rotate her head as if pondering us. Liked it.
Very peculiar creature, and so was the bug.

Does it have wings? If not, then it's a nymph. If so, then it's an adult. I am a beginning entomology student and would love to try to identify it if you still have it using my taxonomic key.:hmmm: I live nearby in Rohnert Park
