Algae is really cool, but these folks have not created a major breakthrough.

Closed photo bio reactors (PBR) are very cool, and who doesn't want to fiddle with pumps and pipes and growing your own food, fuel, and fertilizer while also doing bioremediation? It is all very cool and accessible to do it yourselfers.

(rereading that, I guess lots of people don't want to - but I sure do :-)

The PBR model _is_ great for creating initial innoculant (ie. for building up a colony of algae to then be added to a pond), and for producing relatively small quantities of pure stocks, but the costs of PBR's just don't work for economical fuel production, for that you want open pond systems.

You can get involved in Algae
Check out the Chlorophyll Collective: https://www.chlorophyllcollective.org/

And here is something 'Dr. Friendly' was part of:

This Algae workshop at the Shipyard/All Power Labs in Berkeley is nominally over, but work is ongoing, and the Shipyard is a great place to hack on projects:

They didn't finish all of their objectives in creating an algae lab in a shipping container, but work continues, and I assume they would love more people!
