It looks to me like, each time I receive the daily digest, all the posts that were posted in my subscribed categories since the last digest are included in the new one. Why then did my post #11 in the thread entitled "Re: Competition puts homeopathy on trial" never show up in the daily digest?

I don't know. But I can tell you two things:
1) Every time I look into why a post is not in someone's digest there's a good reason that is not a system malfunction
2) There was a day last week that posts between 6pm and 6:48pm were not included in digest because I re-launched the digest because of a spam issue and then I forgot to change the time back for a day or two. I consider this to be a user error (mine!) rather than a technical one. Unfortunately this does not explain your situation.
I'm sorry, but I can't research this issue now. I am fighting fires on multiple fronts (though not 800!) including recovering from my second disk crash this year, switching to a Mac, and the whole -BB flap.
