An ingenious example of speech and politics occurred recently at the
U.N. and made the world community smile.

A representative from <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Israel</st1:country-region></st1:place> began:

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
“Before beginning my talk I want to tell you something about Moses.
When he struck the rock and it brought forth water, he thought, 'What a good opportunity to have a bath! He removed his clothes, put them aside on the rock and entered the water. When he got out and wanted to dress, his clothes had vanished. The Palestinians had stolen them.'

The Palestinian representative jumped up furiously and shouted, 'What
are you talking about? The Palestinians weren't there then.'

The Israeli representative smiled and said 'And now that I have made
that clear, I will begin my speech.’

Kinda funny, but sounds like one of those quotes that never got said; or if it did, the Palestinian hadn't read the Pentateuch. As I read it, a nomadic tribe gradually moved in and slaughtered the resident population. By "slaughter" I mean systematic extermination. Par for the course, of course, for the Holy Land over millennia. But the concept of "a land without a people" was a Britisher's phrase that had scant basis in fact, either in Moses' time or in Ben Gurion's.

Peace & joy--
