Tis the season to be eaten tra la la la la la la
Apparently I am bug candy!
I need something not deet (and if it takes the ink off the label - not really wanting it on me) to ward these guys off.
Any ideas?
PS Some may not be mosquitoes. Big black bugs that bite. Oh and though I haven't been got yet the black fly guys get me too. Pretty much if it bites it seems to like me.
(For those who know my Dave his answer was to stop being a pretty girl. Pretty girls just attract bugs apparently.)

And I'm a bug.
What's the problem with deet? It's what works best.

Jeffie you may nibble all you want but thee mean things that leave bumps have got to stop!
Deet hurts my skin. I am very sensitive to sensation on the skin.
I am pondering Avon bug spray used the formula when it first came out but that was 10 years ago.
Anyone use it recently. Bugs bite me through Skin So Soft, almost anything citrus too
And I'm a bug.

Here's a little article out of Texas: https://www.galvnews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=4b3941a53fea0f1a&-session=TheDailyNews:42F949E30c740004B6qVjGBD9274
Citronella is kind of a joke. Works for about five minutes. That's what's in Skin so Soft. All the herbal stuff only works if you spray it constantly throughout the day; lavender and other aromatic oils. Use 'em if you like the smell and let us know how they work for you.
I wonder about the cedar oil products and also about neem which has a nearly legendary status in some circles. Cedar smells so nice if it works at all it's worth a try.
I've not found citronella based candles or torches to work at all. Mosquito "magnets" are expensive toys, not effective to any great degree. I've read many dozens of reviews hoping ...
Here's a pro "alternative" products article that looks like it was written by someone working for a "health food" store. Recent studies don't show any alternatives coming close to even low concentration deet in effectiveness: https://altmedicine.about.com/od/aznaturalremedyindex/a/mosquito.htm
I use deet based products, but mostly I just spray it on my clothes, not on my skin. I do put some on arms and legs if exposed and maybe a little smear on my forehead. I've never had any bad reaction so I'm lucky. The little suckers like my blood too.
Let us know if you find anything that works really well!

Yes I am, kiss me and make it better!
Ummm what do you do at nude parties? Cause deet and penis is not attractive.
Well I think I'll retry the Avon used to work - no reaction.
Cant use lavender and the such just brings the guys on. Man make me smell like a flower and i get not only the biters but the wasps and bees!

Well, I have a lot of santolina (because no deer will even try it) and, although it's listed as an herb, the only use I've found mentioned for it is that it keeps flies away. I only tried it once, and it seemed to help; don't need it anymore, really, since my frogs seem to eat most of the bugs. It's really pungent, but if you want to try wearing some around your neck, or on your hat, I'll be happy to bring you some.

Both catnip oil and oil of lemon eucalyptus repell insects as well as Deet. I use this stuff and it works quite well:

I too am a mosquito & bug delicacy. For when there are a few bugs I use my own spray made of water and essential oil of citronella and lavendar. For heavy duty jungle-like conditions try Don't Bug Me patch-it is a vitamin B patch that lasts 36 hours- I got no bites when I used this (available online). Taking vitamin B won't work the same.
p.s. DEET is a known neurotoxin
In Hawai`i, where there are LOTS of mosquitoes, i've seen the mosquitoes
mob one person in a group almost to the exclusion of the others. The difference?
They go for the one who eats the most sugar. So my suggestion is: Analyze your
diet for a week to see how many calories you get from sugars of any kind--
sugar, honey, corn syrup, etc.--and cut that in half. It will take another week or
two on the new diet, but i think you'll notice a difference. Also, use a FOOD GRADE
(very pure) eucalyptus oil on your skin; an oil of food grade purity ought not to irritate your skin.

https://www.quantumhealth.com/productgroups/itchandbite.html Check out this link for this product based on Geranium oil..the researchers at University of Guelph said it tied with deet for effectiveness.. I have used just straight geranium oil on my clothes and it works great

There is also research that indicates that some people have more lactic acid in their sweat than others. Mosquitos are quite attracted to lactic acid, so therefore these lactic acid exuders really do get bitten more.
Lactic acid is a by-product of anaerobic respiration, which is what happens when one is exercising without getting enough oxygen to the muscles to support aerobic respiration.
My intuition (i.e., not medical training) leads me to suspect that if one is in the acid state rather than the desired slightly alkaline state, then one would tend to generate and exude more lactic acid. One of the causes of the acidic state is intestinal candidiasis and other intestinal imbalance caused by... too much sugar/carbohydrate ingestion, which would support Moon's observation.
Of course, there may also be a genetic pre-disposition to having sweat with a higher level of lactic acid. It seems like there is a genetic component to just about everything concering metabolism and body type!

I recall Jergerns Lotion was used by fishing buddies of mine and they told me they were some what successful with it. Hand lotion as I recall.

I have no suggestion for prevention. However, I just read one of my old herbal books because my mama used to pick plantain leaves in the backyard for our cuts. According to the article, it will help with itchy bug bites and poison oak too. Give it a try. I am.
