I have similar questions about how to grow onions and garlic.
I have lots of each that I planted when they sprouted. I also plant green onions from the store - buy a bunch, plant a few and eat the rest.
Now the onions are starting to flower. I know to break them off so they send the energy down to the bulb but then what?
Does anyone know more the growing process?
I am planning to get a kids book at the library on onions and garlic...
How does one get multiple cloves from one clove of garlic?
Do spring onions turn into regular onions later in the growing season?
I could go on and on. Will be away a week but will then will share more.
I too am growing potatoes and planting lots of seeds in three brand new garden beds Sammy buildt for us. We hope to have a LITE garden for the EAT-Lite program which is in developement.
Let's have seed parties!
Does anyone want to come to the Plaza on May 4 and/or June 1 at 9:30 am to share seeds and extra plants? LITE has bike ride and NE area walks at 10 both days.

My elephant garlic, from store bought clove have managed to multiply on their own, making bulbs from cloves. They also seem to seed. I have read many sources, which all disagree on when to pull them, some stating when the leaves are just starting to yellow, one %10, and one when very yellowed! They are in a pot in the front yard, I adore the flowers and the fragrance, just about to flower now. Last year I took the ones that were bulbed and used them, and put the rest back in where they are growing again.....I hope to have enough to braid a strand from my pot this year of nice sweet garlic. Of course home grown tastes better than any storebought. mindy

Wait. :)
How does one get multiple cloves from one clove of garlic?
The clump of garlic you can buy at the grocery store (a bulb) contains several cloves. When you plant a single clove and let it grow for a few months, it'll form into a bulb like the one you originally bought.
I don't really know anything about onions, as this is the first year I've planted any, but garlic's pretty easy. A garlic plant is pretty much done when its leaves start yellowing and curling under. You don't have to wait for all of them to yellow. I dig mine up when about half of them are.
https://thegarlicstore.com/index.cgi/howto.html was pretty helpful for me.

Hi Portia,
If you've planted onions that started to sprout, the onions disappeared and became plants. Don't break off the flowers. Let them bloom and you'll have lots and lots of seeds for next year. You won't have any onions now though. They are gone and won't come back.
Just keep adding compost at the base of the garlic plants and keep watering when necessary to prevent wilting. At some point the plants stop growing and it's time to slow down and eventually stop watering. You can leave the bulbs in the ground for months or harvest when ready. They won't rot if the ground is fairly dry and will last longer there than in a braid or otherwise indoors. The single clove turns into a bulb on its own after the plant becomes mature. There is a wonderful book on the subject called "Growing Great Garlic." Grow shallots too. They're easy and productive and oh-so expensive in the store (for no good reason I can see).
"Spring onions" do not turn into "regular" onions. Read up on spring onions here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_onions
For a beginner, it's probably best to just buy a pack of onion "starts" at a hardware store. Separate them carefully and plant at least a couple inches deep. Add mulch around the base as they grow. Onions are very satisfying for me since I use so many and it's just so nice to go out and pull a few for dinner. They also last quite a while in the ground, but not as long as garlic in my experience. Try to eat them before they start to sprout or get moldy. If they start to sprout, plant them for the seeds they'll produce in a few months.
And yes! Let's have a gathering or two where we can exchange plants. I have a great many tomatillos coming up and also a whole lot of onions I think are Walla-Wallas (big sweet yellow onions).
Anybody have any "Egyptian onions?"
