I'm wondering if a bad muffler can back exhaust and other junk into the engine? Is that possible? If so, how much damage, if any, can it cause the motor?

not into the engine, but into the car itself, if even you can't smell it, it can come in and you will breathe it..........................

As long as you talking muffler, do not allow a muffler mechanic to squeeze your exhaust pipe or crimp it with with pliers. He might want to show you that your pipes are weakening to sell you new pipes. However this crimping practice which makes concave impressions in your pipe will eventually cause you to replace the pipe. You see the hot exaust now has to blow past that impression which heats up and burns a hole in the pipe. Neet trick to blow a hole in your wallet.

In my experience (although I'm not a mechanic, just in the auto industry) that yes it can, well especially the catalytic converter which is connected. Maybe both! My experience was a car that was driven with a bad cat for long enough that it completely damaged the engine. I'm actually not sure about the muffler doing as much damage as the cat, but i bet so....

If your muffler isn't working, your vehicle will be loud, and fumes may well be coming into your car, back pressure is not an issue till you replace the muffler and put a new one in. This sometimes causes the back pressure and causes other exhaust items in line also to fail, though they would have needed replacement any way as I am told. Converters are beyond my grasp. Cannot pass smog with bad exhaust. mindy
