We did it again! On Tuesday, March 11, with eloquence, knowledge, heart and humor, the public stood up and spoke their truth. They epitomized what it means to be part of a grassroots effort to save our town. About 100 people attended the three and a half hour Planning Commission hearing. People sported SPC’s green badge proclaiming “save our General Plan”.

All but a handful of the 45 people who spoke told the Planning Commission why the Northeast Area Plan and EIR are flawed and should be rejected by them and the City Council. The traffic and water issues were hit hard, as were the economics and the lack of respect of the Laguna. The heretofore totally unmentioned question of the high cost of insuring property in the flood plain was introduced by an insurance broker. The evening was upbeat and the Commissioners listened, many made notes.

Special thanks go to all these well-prepared speakers: Ken Silveira, owner of Pacific Markets (opposes the Plan because it doesn’t make economic sense for him or for the town), James Conrad, Chris Clay Bauman, Adriane Hatkoff, Will Riggan, Holly Downing, Alan Horn, Joan Przekop, Kevin Dwan, Dee Cope, Rick Andres, Paula Downing, Magick, Jane Nielson, Nansi Weil, Eric Johnson, Arnold Levine, Peter Schurch, Clare Najarian, Steve Pierce, Craig Williams, Karen Felker, Jeff Pearce, Patricia Dines, Laura Shafer, Dave Little, Sheila Lawrence, Michael Jacob, Carol Mitchel, Marsha Mengelberg, Brenda Poston Schaeffer, Dale Miller, Gayle Bergmann, Sharon Kaiser, Helen Shane.

The next few weeks may be key to our success. Don’t be distracted. We will need to make similar enthusiastic, thoughtful comments to the City Council very soon. Keep your speeches and revise them if appropriate after hearing the Commission’s recommendations to the City Council.
