Imagine if...

when you're riding your bike into Sebastopol on the old Highway 12 and as you pass into the city limits, you ride under a living arch covered in grapes with willow letters of welcome. The air smells sweet and you park your bike in the bike station, put your helmet in your locker, and walk to the livability center to get some tea, make copies, do laundry and take care of some emails. There are children playing in the courtyard under fruit trees and picking peppermint for your tea. Most of the products sold in town come from the community, and are made of recycled and green materials that are non-toxic, high-quality and original pieces from people you know. A local musician strolls in playing guitar and singing as belly-dancers and martial artists practice in the glass-fronted studio spaces. There is so much energy, you go for a solo walk down the laguna paths and notice native species reclaiming the riparian zone. The birds, fish and frogs are thriving, and the water is clean enough to swim in.

It is hard to imagine that this area was formerly degraded. The community nipped this problem in the bud by overturning a more "run-of-the-mill" plan for redevelopment. With the support of an active and visionary citizenry, the city bought the property collectively through a "Village Trust" that then developed cutting-edge ecological buildings replacing the current steel and cement with living roofs, walls, gardens and swales. The area is a research center and living model similar to the Solar Living Institute, but with a focus on water technologies. The Living Water Institute has students from Sonoma State, New College and Gaia University living and working onsite to measure the success off the projects. It attracts visitors from all over the world who are learning from this leading-edge community how to live in a way that is not only sustainable, but thriving!

A co-housing community of people invested into this community land trust in order to live in a car-free community where they were inspired to share meals, raise children as a village and synergize to generate local abundance and culture. Weekly chattaqua's include performers and information about local issues. Electronic polling has facilitated a true majority to be represented for local decisions, and democracy is alive and well!

This could truly go on and on!

What do you want to see the Northeast Area of Sebastopol be?

There is a public planning process happening to redevelop the industrial northeast area of Sebastopol (between Whole Foods and the Laguna). Your voice could help to create something amazing!

Dear Lauren, I share your vision and have always thought we are meant to create such an example for the world.
And Right now is the crucial time to be involved. The City Council is poised to approve the changes in our current General Plan to allow 4 story luxury apartments on the edge of the Laguna., retail the size of 8 Safeways that would generate 55,000 new car trips a week!
4 of the 5 Council people have voiced their support for this destructuve plan, with minor reservations.
We need to stop the approval of a flawed Environmental Impact Report if we are going to have a chance to do the right thing.
On the 11th, 100 people turned out to speak their truth at the Planning Commission. The Overwhelming majority opposed the Plan because of building in a flood zone, further intrusion on the already degraded Laguna, earthquake danger, traffic, in fact there were eloquent speakers on so many diffferent topics, it was truly impressive. But that doesn't mean they'll listen and act to support the will of the people.
Come to meetings, contact your Council members, this is nothing less then a movement to save the soul of our town.
You are invited to join the Sebastopol Preservation Coalition, SPC, to open the way for visions such as Lauren's.The public needs to be well represented at the Planning Commission on Tuesday, March 25th at 7pm at the Teen Center on Morris St.
Then come to a SPC meeting at 7pm on the 26th at Palm Drive Hospital conference room to brainstorm and strategize about what's next.

Yours in Truth, Magick

What we are looking for right now, Lauren, is a fully responsive collaboration network, to form among the responsibly creative new peoples of change.

We will need a strongly bonded core group, of competent parental level people, who are the self sufficiency carriers.

These are the truly fine kind of people, who have no needs, and ask nothing from the others, if you can believe that, or at least you will never hear them talk about it, if they do, because nothing can be done with Need, or its expression, as none of that ever adds up, into anything. That is Rule Number One.

That is how we think of it here. Don't throw your Needs on our Table.

If people have needs, then they can be enslaved. If they are Self Sufficient, then they cannot be enslaved.

We are to become like the many Self Sufficient People out there, who do not need the Community to support them, or to save them, because of their lifetime, of self sufficiency, as they are have already gotten off the grid, of dependency, and they already have land, all paid off, and they already have an extended family, to take care of them, in their old age, who will not just run off to New York City, and they already have their own water supply, and their own Solar Power Systems.

They don't come here with needs, because like T, they come here with blessings to bestow, and so we should be grateful for that.

These Self Sufficient Land Stewards, in our Community, will be like the New Gods, in comparison to these other brothers, with all their druthers, at least in our eyes, who think they are shopping at the mall, since the real homesteaders, will be honored, even if the others do not yet recognize the need for that kind of an ethic yet.

Some of these People of Today, may not even know, who it is they are even dealing with here, when they deal with people like T, who has been living Off the Grid for over 20 years, and does not even seem to care about their imaginary needs, for security and comfort, in deep dependency, which should have sent up some red flags somewhere, deep down below, but we are not just a bunch of needy greedy children of dependency culture, who are looking for a community, to run to, for short term sustenance, in our absence, of self sufficiency.

Some Training will be Required. It is not for the feint of heart.

But Eden is Real. That is the difference. We meet on September 29th. - T
