I am going to the Yucatan in the fall, and to maximize our adventure, I want to rent bikes and use the car for major travel while using the bikes to explore temples and back roads. I will be renting a vehicle too, and I am trying to figure out what is best to rent without getting something as big as Explorer. I am looking for something that can handle dirt roads or unmaintained paved roads, with wet or muddy conditions. Vehicle needs to hold two adults, two internal frame backpacks, 30# of high end photo gear and two mountain bikes with the wheels, handlebars and seats on-possible to remove a quick release front tire, but not the backs for sure. Four or all wheel drive is not necessary, but couldn't hurt. Gas mileage is also a plus as gas is not sold on every corner of every town. I am not interested in an open bed situation, as I need the bikes and photo gear under lock and key while I am not using them(theft comes into mind with us as an easy target otherwise). Personal experiences only, and no negative mojo.
