Lunar Eclipse Reflection-Rebirth
— Andrea Freeman 2/20/08

The moon was under the spell of the earth's shadow tonight—
the shadow of earthly concerns that can shroud one's heart like a dark veil
and cause one to fret and recoil and sadden;
all the tangled snarls of mayic confusion
that can occlude the glow and warmth of love and communion.

But finally the silver sliver of light began to return,
like a Mona Lisa smile at first,
then like a cheshire cat grin,
and my heart began to lighten, too,
with each glint and glimmer that peeked out from behind the veil.
Such a relief to breathe light again!

The unveiling continued,
my heart growing lighter and lighter,
until only the top right of the moon was still covered.

Now looking like the head of a Black-Crowned Night Heron
whose sleek black crown becomes invisible against the backdrop of night sky,
the slice of white across the eyes giving the illusion of being the top,
the moon and it's shedding shadow skin played in the night.

And then more lustrous moon light returned;
now the shadow was like a Tam O' Shanty cap tilted for show
on the head of the glorious Moon Maiden.

And my heart began to feel elated with joy and relief;
the burden and pressure of the shadow having lifted.
Like a mother feels after a long child-birth, when only joy remains,
magnified a hundred-fold in the aftermath of the pain
that is now a quickly fading memory, like a dream.

Oh, blessed moonlight, shine on me! Shine in me!
Thank you for returning to us.
Thank you for shining on us all!
