I am sure IF you are a RESPONSIBLE breeder you will have NO problem finding a mate for your Lab. RESPONSIBLE breeders are in contact with one another, constantly comparing notes and doing the best they can to preserve the best of their breed, unlike backyard breeders. RESPONSIBLE breeders have a waiting list of potential carefully screened buyers before they create a litter. If you are having to advertise for a bitch to breed with I must assume you are NOT a RESPONSIBLE breeder and therefore are having problems connecting with RESPONSIBLE breeders for your Lab to sire. Are you willing to take back each and every pup you produce, no questions asked, no matter when, why, in the future? If not, you are NOT a RESPONSIBLE breeder. You are what is called a backyard breeder and our shelters are full of your dogs.
Sorry to be so blunt, but please think again about what you are trying to accomplish by breeding your AKC (whatever that means these days) OFA dog. As I said above, if you are a known, reputable, RESPONSIBLE breeder, you should not have to advertise for a mate for your dog. Nor should you have to advertise to sell the puppies.

Hi Barbara
I have had my line of labs for 27 years and have bred only three times-each time the pups were already sold before the litter was born to family and friends. I appreciate your concern but believe you are overstepping your boundaries and lecturing someone who is a responsible and loving dog owner. I have been out of the circuit for awhile and thought WAC0 was a friendly non-judgemental site to mention my beautiful male (the great-great-great-great grandson of my first lab). My labs are the Sweedish Hanover line and Carter's Mountain Chocolates. I in general avoid the breeders circle you talk about because of individuals like yourself. I would only take serious inquiries from someone like myself who wanted pups not for profit but for maintaining their line. I am only looking to do this one time. I suggest you consider your words before sending out emails like this when you have no idea who you are dealing with. I am responding privately and if you did otherwise-I would a! ppreciate an apology.
Sincerely
Caroline

Hello dog lovers,
I can see both sides of this argument but I have to say my heart is with Dian's sentiments. Just stepping into even the most humane shelters (an oxymoron perhaps) is heartbreaking. All those eyes begging for a life outside of a cage.
It does sound like you, Caroline, are attempting to do your breeding with integrity (another oxymoron?) but truth be told, there are just too many homeless canines out there, most of whom do not have much hope for a good future. We all know that dogs do not thrive in shelters; just because a facility may be non-euthanising does not change the fact that these animals suffer from loneliness beyond imagination. The (sort of) good news is that many shelters employ kind, animal loving individuals but unfortunately, the work of maintaining the shelter precludes having time for lots of play and loving for the residents, which they need as much as they do food and water. And of course, we've all heard of the shelters with horrible conditions, which everyone in this thread I am sure, finds despicable. Perhaps donating the money you receive for selling the pups to animal causes would be a positive outcome of your breeding practice; that way you get to preserve whatever it is that breeders think is so important and give back to the canine community at the same time.
I also understand the love of a breed; I've had German Sheperds all my life but they have all been rescue dogs; some purebred, some mixed but all with the big hearted intelligence the breed is known for.....perhaps some of the people who would buy your pups would adopt from a Lab rescue if breeders did not continually create more puppies to serve a human ego need.
This is not meant to be judgmental, merely an expression of a strong opinion just as you and others have done in this venue. And yes, judgment and strong opinions are very close cousins. It's the rudeness that sometimes shows up in this forum that is off-putting. That's what freedom of speech is all about, though. If differing opinions and/or judgmental comments are offensive, an open forum like this is best avoided.
